About Me

I've been outside of the UK for around 10 years. I started off teaching English to adults in Cairo and came to Mexico (via a short stint in Sweden) when I felt I was ready to move on. I miss Egypt all the time, but Mexico has offered me some fun opportunities, too. I taught teaching Spanish to Arabic speaking refugees for a nonprofit in a city called Aguascalientes for a while, and then I took a certificate in Mexican gastronomy. I now give cooking classes to tourists in my home.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

The best vacations I've had have been the ones in which I've used Couchsurfing. Great places are nothing more than the people that live in them, and my idea of a good holiday is one in which I have lots of interesting conversations with local people about what it's like to live where they do.

So far, I've enjoyed one wonderful week in Delhi and a long trip across the United States. It wasn't possible to host in Cairo or Aguascalientes, and in order to pay the rent here in Mexico City, I have to have my spare room on AirBnB most of the time, but if there are a few nights a month when it's free, I'd love to give back to this community that's been so good to me.

Interests

Dinner with friends. Love to cook, and a sucker for low lighting. Always looking out for new music, and a pretty book to leave on my shelf and almost certainly never get round to reading. Cat person, in fact I have two of them living with me these days.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

- Valley of the Kings, Luxor, Egypt, as well as the Egyptian Museum of Antiquities. I wasn't an Ancient Egyptian geek until I saw these. Incredible!
- A ferry through the Stockholm archipelago.
- A trip through the mysterious Sierra Mixe of Oaxaca, extracting pulque directly from the agave and attending corn rituals.

These are just a few. Egypt, Sweden and Mexico are all jaw-dropping places.

Teach, Learn, Share

Could share some language skills if you like, I'm a qualified teacher. I probably can't give you free access to my classes, as my guests pay for those, but I can certainly give you a discount, and if not, just show you some dishes off the record. If you can teach me to play an instrument or draw, you win.
