ABOUT ME

Hi. I'm Brad.
Ahh, life is good. I am currently living in Portland Oregon, back after 6 years of elsewhereness. I've been lucky enough to live all over the states, and most recently I was in New England and Alaska. I signed up for couchsurfing initially before I drove the Alcan highway, meeting a couple of great people along the way. Since, I have hosted and traveled locally and internationally, without really any bad experiences yet to report.

About me - I work strange hours but have a decent amount of time off. I (obviously) love to travel, I play quite a bit of volleyball and basketball (or anything with a ball) and generally like sports a bit too much. Alaska was a pretty outdoors-focused place to grow up, so hiking, biking, general frolicking in the wild are good things.
Music is a pretty major part of my life, and so far every couchsurfing experience I have had involved a rather large swapping of tunes. I also play a bit of guitar, though must admit I haven't been doing so lately. But if you have any good songs to teach me, I am all ears. (or fingers?)
Overall, I enjoy new people and learning new things, so if you can bring a little of that in a visit, you are welcome to crash on my couch/spare bed anytime.

Note: I am not very into the people who are using couchsurfing to look for a place to stay for the first couple of months while they are figuring out how to get settled in Portland. That seems more like something that should be done on craigslist and doesn't really coincide with why I have a profile on here.

PHILOSOPHY

Learn and experience it all.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

As far as hosting, I love meeting traveler-types. They are usually of a similar mind, and they bring some outside flavor to my life. I also believe in paying back the generosity I have received over the years.

As far as surfing, I also really enjoy getting to know a place from the insider perspective. Every time I've explored a new town with a local, it has been a richer experience.

Interests

Just about everything. Sports, reading, travel, music, playing guitar, beer, all things outdoors, movies, the internet, learning new things, and of course meeting new people!

Music, Movies, and Books

Big into Bob Schneider. But I like most music other than twangy country, gangster rap, gospel, or techno.
What comes to mind right now: Shout Out Louds, DMB, Tool, Alexi Murdoch, Dashboard Confessional, Sheila Nichols, Dan Bern, AWOL Nation, Imagine Dragons, Led Zepplin, Greg Laswell, Silversun Pickups, Snow Patrol, The Decemberists, Marcy Playground, Blind Melon, Band of Horses, Alt J, The Burn, many others.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Hmmm.. Growing up surrounded by mountains and glaciers in Alaska was great. I have plenty of bear stories, and some dicey experiences at sea as a commercial fisherman. I used to live in a tent for three months in the middle of nowhere every summer. I have done a 10 day no-talking meditation retreat that was humbling. Once I worked on a decadent round-the-world trip that stopped in some of those places that you want to make sure you see before you die. My job can be interesting from time to time.
