About Me

About me:

Describing oneself in a few sentences never gets easier, does it? I think I'm a free spirit and critical thinker, sometimes even kind of a melancholic brooder. Deep inside I'm very kind though and love to connect honestly to people, help them as good as I can and share the best of me. I try to empathize and be constructive, eventhough in our world it's sometimes hard to always do the right thing, to not give in to the urge to isolate from everything and stop dreaming. As hard as it sometimes is, I still try to see the bright side of life and not lose sight for the beautiful things and honourable people. What else is there left for us to do, right?

A charactersitic I developed strongly to compensate is my sense of humour, it's sometimes cynical and dark but also random. That means we can fool around and have fun, but also share deep and meaningful conversations in the right situation, as I have experienced quite a bit in my life so far. I like to think and talk about society, philosophy, politics, psychology, history and so on, anything that helps me understand this world.
I will not force such conversations though or annoy you, as I grew older I learned that one does not have to make a big discussion out of everything.

When being your guest, I will respect your rules and privacy. Tolerating your way of life goes without saying anyways.

As is the case for everyone, I can't tell everything about myself here. That means you can find out a lot. I will definitely be interested in finding out something about you if we meet.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I'm fascinated by the variety and diversity of our planet and want to get it touch with this treasure. There is an endless amount of people, stories, activities and ways of life. Couchsurfing provides a little bit of insight into these by practical experience instead of just passively reading about it and feeling overwhelmed- which is something I think I have done too long now. I want to experience more first hand. That is connected to the obvious reason everybody lists here - meeting locals as a guest or new people as a host instead of visiting a place but remaining in some kind of bubble.
For me, Couchsurfing is one of the prime examples of how the internet can be used productively to enrich our lifes and connect us in reality. It can help us take some of the endless opportunities we have and start adventures that will lead us to the unexpected and maybe remain unforgoten.

Music, Movies, and Books

Movies/Series: I mostly like movies and Series that realistically deal with profound human emotions, conflicts , developements and values. A great story, message and general athmosphere outweigh everything else for me. Often these are movies inspired by true events, as the best stories are taken from real life. I also like dystopian scenarios, as they raise issues about the character of humanity and morality and gangster and war-movies, partly for the same reason.

Examples: American Beauty, Captain Fantastic, Dead Poet's Society, Into the Wild, Easy Rider, No Man's Land, Black Swan, The Perks of being a Wallflower, Donnie Darko, Children of Men, Fight Club, House of Sand and Fog, Shutter Island, Casino, Goodfellas, Breaking Bad, The Walking Dead, The Dark Knight Trilogy ( I'm a big Batman Fan - I also collect the Comics) and many many MANY more :D

Music: Mostly Classic Rock, Grunge and Metal, also some Folk and Blues.
The Legends like Led Zeppelin, Hendrix, The Doors, Pink Floyd, Rainbow, Iron Maiden, Rolling Stones. Some Psychedelic/Folk like Jefferson Airplane, Byrds, Simon&Garfunkel. Grunge-wise it's also the classics like Nirvana, Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam.
My favourite Band is still System of a Down, saw them twice just like my number two, Black Sabbath.
Some more recent I like are RCHP, Slipknot, Nightwish. I also like crossover like RATM and some rap, mostly Old School.
I'm trying to open up to new music, so feel free to share some of yours with me when we meet.

Games: I like gaming as well, the selection criteria are the same as in movies. There are lots of games that influenced, inspired and made me think differently such as The Last of Us, Metal Gear, The Legend of Zelda, Heavy Rain, Life is Strange (and other Telltale Series), This War of Mine, Beyond two Souls and more

Books: Unfortunantely, I have long lists of books I haven't started reading yet or that I haven't finished.

Novel-wise I f.e. liked 1984, Steppenwolf, Catcher in the Rye, ...
I read some books about Psychoanalysis by Freud or Erich Fromm and different books about political, economical or sociological topics. In my studies I read some excerpts from the classics but ther is definitely still a long way to go.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Still too few things, another reason I'm here

-I hitchhiked with my girlfriend from Germany to Italy, taking the ferry to Croatia and then moving further to my family in Bosnia. Amongst other places, we slept in a truck driver's cabin, someones scrapped boat in Venice and a ruin somewhere at a beach in Zadar.

-The next year we went to Greece and did voluntary work in a refugee camp, which was an intense experience.

-I worked for Doctors without Borders (MSF) as a Fundraiser in the Baltic sea region, where us campaigners slept in an old Lighthouse that was converted into an apartment.

- hiked down Grand Canyon to Colorado river and back up, camping at Indian Garden. ~24km with 2800m Elevation change.

Teach, Learn, Share

I like to share customs, thoughts and opinions about the world with all sorts of people, especially with those who see things differently than me. So no matter what kind of person you are, I will be happy to get to know you and your views and empathize. I will respect your ways and share with you if I agree or disagree so we can learn from each other.
I can share with you the sometimes more, sometimes less interesting stories and experiences of a german university-student, who grew up multiculturally and tries to find his way and meaning in life.

What I Can Share with Hosts

Something very practical I could mention here is that I like fixing stuff. Im no craftsman but if I'm your guest and something in your place annoys you all to time for not working right maybe we can look at it and share the satisfying feeling of it being taken care of :)

- I can cook for you or we can cook together, Pasta is my speciality
