About Me

CURRENT MISSION

ABOUT ME

Born and raised in Toronto, Canada, have also lived in Montreal, Brussels and (briefly) Senegal. Have a good deal of travelling under my belt in North America, Europe, and Africa, and have come to realize the best part of this all is the people I meet along the way. Or maybe it's the food... Or maybe it's the challenge of having the best experience for the smallest amount of money... Hmmm

PHILOSOPHY

Resolving internal contradictions!

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

Most of my surfing experience has been with my friend Diana on our joint account, which you can see over in my friends (Diana + Andrew) if you want to see some references. We did a big road trip across Canada and the US, staying with the most interesting people, exposed to unusual and mind-opening lifestyles.

Music, Movies, and Books

Asghar Farhadi, Wong Kar-Wai, Anderson (PT, not Wes), Haneke, Vinterberg, big historical epics like Lawrence of Arabia or Master and Commander, 90s Hong Kong action movies

Hip hop, funk, soul, r&b, jam bands. Lately Action Bronson, Elzhi, Pharoahe Monch, Chance the Rapper, Black Milk, Curtis Mayfield, Supremes, Dam-Funk, D'Angelo, Erykah Badu, John Grant, and Toronto boys Sandro Perri and Ryan Driver. Always, the Grateful Dead

I love historical fiction and non-fiction, and extra points to anything colonial and/or nautical. Conrad, Greene, and Fukuyama are favourites.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I once hitched a ride on a cattle freighter through the pirate waters of the Gulf of Aden on my way from Djibouti to Yemen. They hauled up these wide-eyed, mooing cows one by one on this rickety crane. I slept out on the open deck in the 40°C heat for three days as the boat slugged along. Every once in a while we'd see warships from the international anti-piracy task force appear out of the sandy haze.

Teach, Learn, Share

Sailing or windsurfing, if the weather's right. Always happy to practice languages. I like to help people with their English, and I'm always down to work on my French. Used to have a little Swahili too, which would be cool to revive.
