About Me

I am person from Slovenia with a bad case of wanderlust. I am not quite sure what I want to do with my life yet, but here's to hoping I get there.

I have a photoblog at http://blog.nikabric.com, if you want to see a bit of my travels.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I've traveled quite a bit when I was younger, but those were short trips, that could really only offer a cursory impression of a place. I really want to move around and get a location independent job, so that I can stay in places for longer. However, I still like shorter trips and I think that's where Couchsurfing comes into play. I think that having a local show you around can really transform a short trip and give you a deeper knowledge and experience of an area/city. For the same reason I would also love to host people, but currently am unable to.

Interests

You can call me "Jack of all trades, master of none". I have trouble focusing on one interest, but I'm learning that in the current society this isn't the best way to go, so I am trying to narrow it down, at least for a while.

I try to read a lot. A few of my reading guidelines that I am trying to incorporate into my habits are 1.) more female authors, 2.) more non-fiction (fields like sociology, philosophy), 3.) less Young Adult fiction (no challenge, feels nice though) and 4.) to try and stray slightly away from English-speaking authors (more Slovenian, but also more WORLD, iycmd).

I enjoy arts (mostly consuming, but also a bit of producing) - photography, literature, music, film and fine arts. I have a BSc in Computer Science and am planning on doing a Masters in Graphic in Interactive Communication. I like programming and mathematics, but I want to make it interdisciplinary, I'm a "Jack" after all. I also love learning languages, currently working mostly on and Chinese and German (staying in Stuttgart from September to February 2017/18).

I can be quite lazy, but when I get to it, I have a lot of fun doing sports. Not competitive though, I played volleyball for 8 years and I really don't miss the competition (miss the sport though). I also like martial arts, yoga, hiking (I want to merge this with traveling) and would generally try anything that doesn't seem too dangerous (definitely don't want to jump into water off anything higher than 3 metres).

I have many causes I care about (feminism, LGBT+, environment), but am not really an active activist. I try to at least keep myself in check (sometimes also my friends), but I do want to apply more in the future. I have volunteered (environment related) and I want to make it a regular thing.

I haven't really done anything about this, but I am also interested in things like DIY, gardening/horticulture, survivalist concepts and woodworking.

I said I am trying to narrow it down, didn't I?

Music, Movies, and Books

Music: I can find something I like in almost any genre, but right now I listen mostly to folk, indie, jazz and pop. I love going to concerts, whether it is a musician I've heard of before or not, and I always like finding new music to listen to.

Movies: I tend to like funny dramas the most, but I can also go for something heavier once in a while. A combo of well developed characters, visually and conceptually stunning shots and subtle humour will usually win me over.

Books: Anything, honestly. Favourite genre is science fiction, but I don't discriminate genre wise. If I had to do one thing all the time, it would be reading.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I once said "no thanks" to an offer of chocolate.

Teach, Learn, Share

I love discussing languages, their structure and etymology. I could tell you about Slovene language and would love to drill you about any of the languages I'm learning or even the ones I'm not. Also happy to do English, I get way too little speaking practice anyway.

I could also show you some programming basics and learning resources, basic self-defense techniques, a few tin whistle or flute melodies and maybe there's one or two other things that I can do.

I do cook, but I tend to stick to things I know, because when I don't ... let's just say it's an adventure. Anyway I would love it if you would show me how to cook local or national dishes or any that you know really. I can be quite picky and I think the way to minimize that is by learning to use these foods in my own cooking.

A huge part of self-development for me is being more open-minded and free of stereotypes (impossible, but I try), so I like to exchange opinions about most things. When I say exchange, I mean hear yours, because I usually need to feel comfortable before sharing mine.

I am happy to *teach, learn, share* anything connected to things I listed under My Interests.
