Why I’m on Couchsurfing
*2026 update: back in Humboldt after my trip to Japan. Jefferson Community Center is working on opening a hostel in Eureka and I hope to help them! After years of trying- I have had to temporarily give up on opening a hostel myself- but I kept to the mission of finding a way to add value to my community and helping others not just enjoy visiting but also add value as well. I started a Reusable serviceware business- so rather than using single use disposables- i hire locals to bring dishes to events and gatherings and we pick up the dirty dishes and wash them- so there is practically no trash at events- and more local jobs. We also do waste reduction management and teach vendors and attendees what is locally compostable- and whats not locally getting composted (such as bioplastics). It makes me so happy to make this service available and inspire other communities to follow our lead. I have become proud of my culture and hope to share with others what makes California and the people here so special. (I will also be first to talk about what I think is not so great about my area/state/country- but one of my biggest lessons from traveling is that I am not my government- and I definitely dont agree with a lot of things they do- but i am so extremely greatful to have grown up in the bay area, and forever thankful to have ended up calling Humboldt my home <3 I hope you come visit, learn, and be inspired.
*2022 update Traveling India until August, then i will be going to Arcata California to open a hostel in which I hope to make traveling to California more affordable, while teaching people how it is possible to help local communities while traveling :)
Here to meet locals and other travelers, share experiences, and travel advice:)
I never could have imagined that that my journey would have this long and taken me this far.
I love to talk budget travel! I am not a stingy person especially when it comes to people who host me in their home... but please understand I'm not so able to go to nice restaurants or pricey tours... sticking to a minimalist budget is what makes me happy :)
**IMPORTANT NOTE**
I use Facebook and Instagram to communicate =] (fb; Carly Tambling. Instagram: carlysweetheart)
There is free wifi most everywhere and worst comes to worst i can always borrow a phone from the nearby bus station/restaurant/cafe etc
I travel to too many countries, and just stopped making sense to pay for a phone number.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done
I never meant to travel, I actually went to Peru for a 3 month internship... (keeping things short) the internships left me stranded in Peru alone for three months... Nerve wracking, but turned out to be the best thing that's ever happened to me! I discovered hostels and street food and markets. Incredible places and the best part was meeting other travelers! And listening to their stories like I'd never imagined anything outside of California and all the sudden my life was shook with stories of bus trips and solo travels. New places I had to see like the city of eternal spring in Colombia and sparkling salt flats in Bolivia. Then all the sudden I ended up in one of the seven natural wonders of the world in Vietnam, teaching English... and so on :)
What I Can Share with Hosts
I'm loaded with travel tips, and love to share my experiences with people who find traveling at all interesting !
Trips to the market are my favorite thing to do in a new town, so if time suits us I would love to cook and or bring back something interesting from the local market!
And I always am willing to help out and am incredibly grateful for my hosts that are making this journey possible, and am forever in debt to this tremendous wave of kindness!
