About Me

I am a pretty curious person, always interested in finding out new things and meeting different people. Im sure thats typical of couchsurfing...

Truth is central. I value honesty, transparency and empathy.
I want to find a way to combat the inequality, exploitation and suffering in the world.

I love culture in general, but I guess music and art (in a broad since) are what takes up my time. I believe these things are inherently collective, being our collective conversation right here now on the planet. I like hearing how others do it.

A long with trying to make music and art, running a small project space/gallery in Peckham takes up a lot of my time. Its called limbo http://limbolimbolimbo.com/ (you are all invited - as guests, contributors or whatever). Have also been working on setting up a new online gallery, that will try to be more international with a more diverse lens. As well as this I am planning on setting up a larger space this year in an old meat factory. Setting up, facilitating and providing space and opportunities is kind of my thing. I like getting people together and helping relationships form.

I make films about all the typical stuff, I am interested in that which is politically and philosophically engaged. My work is generally conceptual and I am motivated by what is contextually relevant maybe explaining my need to travel and meet new people.

Im a child of postmodernism. I try not to make commodities. Yet, have recently realised the importance of objects in an increasingly virtual world. I have read a bit of Zizek, Baudrillard, Adorno, Debord and Mark Fisher and I guess I'm trying to get over Capitalism. I would say I believe in what is best for all living things. So long as we believe in what is best for all we should try our best for a world that is best for all. Im trying to get into Eastern philosophy.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I feel the relationship and form of exchange in Couchsurfing should be commended and fought for, as an archetype of travel and accommodation in the new world. We need work out new ways of sharing and exchange that cant be exploited.

I come to learn and and share experiences, feelings and viewpoints.

Interests

Saying something is hard since I am interested in so much and mentioning a few might suggest that I'm not interested in other things but...

Music - ''''world'''' music or at least non western music, particularly Iranian, Turkish (phy) and lots of stuff from the levant. I love African stuff pertularily from the Congo and Mali. I love UK music (Hessle Audio etc.) I am a DJ and mainly play freaky dance music. It circles around the acid, techno, trance, ebm and idm vibe yet i like throwing weird experimental post rave stuff in there. I like post punk you can dance to and been really getting into this coldwave soviet electronica . Im also a big fan of Dub, Jungle, Trap, Garage, Grime, Motown etc. etc.

Art (I like a few thing happening today such as with pattrick goddard, louise ashcroft, richard mosse, francis alys, simon faithfull, steve mcqueen, issac julian and lawrence lek. Im into the 20th centuary perticularily that what happened in paris and new york. Of corse I love the old masters and like getting lost in galaries. Im maybe more interested in the stuff between the art object - the institution etc.
This is really really really out of date but check out my vimeo: https://vimeo.com/irolowry (im working on my website)

I like foreign cinema, maybe because the best gets brought to the west. I like being introduced to and finding weird movies on TV while I travel. Not to say some Uk films are okay.

I like books. I alternate between fiction and non fiction. Mainly late 20th century literature and contemporary and late 20th non fiction.
