About Me

CURRENT MISSION

My goal when I was younger was to spend at least a year in every place I wanted to go. I am slowly beginning to achieve that. Along the way, I'm simply trying to meet good people and be good to those I meet.

ABOUT ME

I grew up in a rural part of Northern California where I learned all about independence and self-reliance. Growing up in a serene (mostly) environment has cultivated my very-chilled out attitude.

With my camera in hand, I like to wander whatever area I'm in searching out the beauty in my surroundings. I tend to do a lot of walking and exploring. I have always found that the best, spontaneous adventures come from simply walking around and getting lost. With friends, I am most content simply having a good conversation and being in good company. Good food and and drinks are always good for facilitating the topics!

PHILOSOPHY

"We are a way for the Universe to know itself" - Carl Sagan

I believe that studying the heavens is one of the most noble ways to pass time while on this earth. Not only do we discover how vast and impressive this life is, outer-space is a reflection of inner-space.

That being said, I cannot even call myself a novice astronomer/cosmologist or any other related field. I simply marvel at those who do and revel in the opportunity to begin to understand it all.

Points I live by:

You don't know until you know - Why worry and fret when you can't see the future? It's easy to spiral in to blackness when we assume and concern ourselves with things unknown. But how much happier we can be when we relinquish what we think will happen, and deal with what does happen.

Pay attention - From meditating to photography, I have found that one cornerstone of learning anything in this life is to pay close attention. It is the way we perfect our craft, the way we empathise with others, and the way we deal with most issues. Because if you don't know that it's there, how can you begin to fix it?

Don't be a dick; aka be kind - More eloquently, have respect and be respected. Respect isn't about how you are dressed, or what job you keep. It is about how you treat others and how they treat you. Show that you are respectable by keeping your cool and standing your ground. Respect others by being honest and forward.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

My wife and I just moved to Cambodia. We are based in Phnom Penh and we're just getting settled with apartment and jobs. Right now, we are looking to make new friends and good contacts, share experiences over drinks and create some new memories!

Once we get our place figured out we will be open to hosting, but that will come soon.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

CS was a huge help, and more over, the greatest way to travel around Australia! I have had great times with hosts, and at CS meet ups.

I'm still traveling, still looking to share the experience, and when I make a home, I will invite you in as well!

Music, Movies, and Books

Lists of movies and book and the like tend to get incredibly lengthy. I'm into all sorts of things. I love reading and watching documentaries. And music, where would any of us be without music?

Some top picks -

FICTION:
Movies:
- All Kubrik all the time; 2001: A Space Odyssey
- Dead Man
- Dog Tooth
- Reservoir Dogs
- The Last Mimzy
- Howl's Moving Castle (and the rest by Miyazaki)
- Neon Genesis Evangelion (series, best ever)
(to name a few)
- Akira
- One Punch Man
- Interstellar

Books:
- Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy
- Heart of Darkness (thanks literature class)
- Grapes of Wrath (fell in love with the imagery)
- Sphere (my first big read as a kid)
- Recently into Jeanette Winterson

NON-FICTION:
Movies:
- Restrepo
- Marwencol
- Planet Earth (those cameramen/women are my heroes)
- (and a big fan of the Vice documentary team)
-

Books:
- Dorothea Lange: A Life Beyond Limits (biography)
- How to Dunk a Doughnut (my first dive into practical physics)
- Flatland (Fiction but it is an allegory for dimensional theory)
- A Brief History of Time
- Gödel, Escher, Bach: An Eternal Golden Braid

I don't know where it fits in, but I've studied (informally) the Tibetan Book of the Dead. It has been a major guide in how I shape my views of religions and practices related to "Eastern" thought.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Watching 20 or so kangaroos hop into the canyons as the sun set on Exmouth. A magical thing.

A midnight hike out to the Pyramids of Meroë, Sudan.

Motorbike ride outside of Hanoi, Vietnam

Teach, Learn, Share

I'm a photographer by trade, so any shop-talk is fine by me. Tips and tricks for lighting, angles, and video. I'm happy to help you improve your photographic skills as long as your happy to wander the streets and take photographs.

I'm trying to learn various languages. Most of all I would like to learn Italian, Spanish, German, French, and Russian. But that's only the tip of the iceberg, there is so much to learn and my fascination is endless.

Countries I’ve Visited

Canada, France, Mexico, Tunisia, United Kingdom, Viet Nam

Countries I’ve Lived In

Australia, Cambodia, Hong Kong, Sudan, United States
