About Me

CURRENT MISSION

I have taken early retirement - four years early in fact - planned to travel the entire South America by mountain bike. I have started in Sau Paulo in February, but due to injury had to return home.

I AM CURRENTLY SAILING BETWEEN THE ISLANDS OF THE INDIAN OCEAN FOR AN INDEFINITE TIME. WE HAVE JUST ARRIVED IN SYECHELLES FROM MADAGASCAR. I HAVE NO IDEA WHEN I WILL BE BACK HOME. IF YOU HAVE UNLIMITED TIME, HAVE SOME SAILING EXPERIENCE AND WISH TO JOIN, DROP ME A NOTE. Covid regulations forced me to stop sailing. Since then I have built a house on a game farm in the Klein Karoo and I am getting ready ti reveive guests again.
ABOUT ME

I am interested in life - what a ride thus far! Experiences count more than money. Values, ethics and maintaining the moral highground keep me going.
I am most creative om my nountain bike - not tricks, but the processes of the brain. Personality assessors say I am creative - not in an artistic way, although I appreciate anyone who can make something out of nothing. I am also very analytical and my most popular question is "Why?"

PHILOSOPHY

I am extremely fortunate to be fit (since I wrote this a year ago I ruptured an Achilles tendon and was forced to stay home. I am however recovering fast.)and healthy and I am using this to the full. The more I know, the more I know I know nothing.
Hypocrites from whatever background - governments, companies or individuals are not welcome in my life. Real people are. A human life is extremely precious.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I had a number of guests and really enjoy the experience. Since we reside in a popular tourist area, I do expect some knocks on my door.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I stayed with a host once in Sao Paulo - what a wonderful experience . I've learned that one must search for hosts well in advance, which is not always possible when you do not know what your own itinerary will look like the next week. Looking forward becoming active in this field.

Interests

Sport - mountain biking (participant) and following most other kinds of sport.
I am no philosopher, but the ways of the world is fascinating. The people who do mind-boggling things and have unique views rate top of the log for me. Being somewhat alternative is cool.

Music, Movies, and Books

Too many to mention.
"The Drifters" had a major impact on my life. But so did Ghandi, Sister Theresa, Koos Dup (an Afrikaans poet/musician who is no more), Rodriques, Beethoven and Bob Dylan. And Ibn Battuta and Boliver and Mandela, and perhaps you too.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

My imagination is sometimes too strong. I had a full life on so many fields that one highlight is difficult. I suppose the first time I undertook a solo mountain bike trip through Madagascar stands out the most. But the best is still to come.

Teach, Learn, Share

Dialogue - the way Plato described it - can go a long way to help the 7-billion odd people alive on Earth right now to get along and undestand each other better. There is no need for everyone to agree; only to create understanding. Whopaa!

What I Can Share with Hosts

Intimate knowledge of South Africa -its geography, great places to visit, fantastic experiences, politics, education systems, corporate life.

Countries I’ve Visited

Argentina, Belgium, Brazil, Chile, England, France, Germany, Italy, Jordan, Lesotho, Madagascar, Mauritius, Namibia, Netherlands, Seychelles, Syrian Arab Republic, Tanzania, Turkey, United Arab Emirates, Uruguay
