Why I’m on Couchsurfing

Gobindgarh fort – the very symbol of Punjab, spread across 43 acres, in the heart of amritsar, this magnificent, heritage site has a glorious history, spanning across 257 years –from the era of the bhangi misl in 1760 to maharaja ranjit singh- to the british east india company to the indian army – In the 18th century, punjab region was ruled by clans called misls. Gujar singh of the bhangi,- Misl built this as a mud fortress- and it came to be known as “bhagian da qilla”. After 49 years, maharaja ranjit singh a rising star of the sukerchakia misl, took over the fort in 1809 and renamed it ‘Qila gobindgarh’ after the 10the guru, guru shri gobind singhji. It was from here that he covered the harmandir sahib “with gold” and it came to be called the Golden Temple. Today the fort is a “live museum” and a firt of its kind high-tech cultural hub with with foods, retail of local crafts as well as amazing projection mapping and 7d and other shows. Its one of the must “places to visit in amritsar”.
