About Me

ABOUT ME

I'm a young dance artist who likes making things, going outside, being active, and eating dessert. I want to have my cake and eat it too. I don't like placing limits on myself or others. Especially limits on how much I can feel and experience joy and pleasure in my life. I choose to make art with bodies as a dance artist. Dance has been at the center of my life for many years. Some of my most poignant experiences have come through choreography and performance. Dance is not my passion because I love being onstage in costumes in front of huge audiences. I love dance because I get to work with people who are willing to be vulnerable, who meet up with me in a giant empty room just so we can problem solve and create art together using our bodies.

Interests

Broadly, my interests include bodies in a social context. I've chosen to focus on dance and gender studies recently because I feel that I am able to explore those ideas in ways that I enjoy. Dance is unlike any other art form in that the means to create art is an actual person. A person with race, gender, sexual orientation, class, and a personal history that is messy, and so wonderfully human.
The body is one of the most complex and controversial topics in history. We are told, in detail, what to do with our bodies every day. We police each other's bodies, and we police our own bodies. It is this that continually fascinates and irritates me, even when it seems to irritate no one else. I take a critical view of mainstream social, political, and cultural views and ideas surrounding the body. My work often addresses taboos, and challenges traditional ideas of what certain kinds of bodies should and should not be doing. I am particularly interested in exploring the power in the erotic, the performance of gender, and portraying a multi-dimensional view of sexuality.
