About Me

My wife is sensitive about entertaining guests as she needs to recover from intensive work in her own safe home. So I consider her needs in the stay of guests. Having said that, she is a really nice person and now and than we do accept guests under clear conditions…

We live in a beautifull old (1300 ) harbourtown in the south west of the Netherlands. The house is new and located at the botten of the former sea (!) in front of the town's old harbour.
A national reserve bird sanctuaria starts at the end of our street, as well as a small beach, where people can windsurf, kite and swim in sweet water. "Salt water" beaches can be reached in an hour by push bikes provided. In the back garden there is……. nothing because the rabbits we keep ate it all ! They just hop around happily in the garden, sometimes escape, but always come home for dinner! There is a tiny wooden garden house to sleep maybe one and a half person. In the house there is a guest room for two too.
Bigger cities like the Belgian Antwerp are only 35 minutes away by car and i could take you there. It is one and a half hour by public transport. The Belgian Brussels is 1 hour by car, and 2 and a half by public transport. Breda is 40 minutes, Rotterdam is 60 kilometres, or 1 hour by PT too, Amsterdam is 2 hours and 15 minutes by PT or car

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I do have many contacts abroad beiing volunteer in organising international multicultural interreligious meetings/civil rights etc. Many times, when traveling for this purpose, I can sleep at privat adresses, but not always. So couchsurfing helps me out here traveling for my volunteer work.
Hotel cost i consider as a waste of money but what is more: it gives me no contact with interesting local people. I dont like it, even if i could afford it. Couch surfing is simply much more fun ! Using the filters on the CS website you can really find people who have the same kind of interests !

Interests

Art, but not the kind "for semi professionals only", not too polished please, though I can respect the old masters and also have a weak spot for the impressionists
and mediëval art my true love is street theatre. Cultural exchange, History, differences in culture, religion and languages. Airplanes (ex licensed glider pilot) long distance walking (Camino de Santiago) and cycling (25 summers in South East England so parts of that i do know better than local taxi divers!) , Swimming, Meditation, Tai Chi and a lot more.

Music, Movies, and Books

too much to tell, old movies too, nice to talk about. I like pop music like Shakira etc. although my 18 year old daughter says that is not the kind of music i am supposed to like being an old man. She refused to go to a concert with me, and right she is!
Psy Gangnam style, etc etc. Folk music from anywhere (Balkan!, Tuva throat singing!), religious (vocal) music, classical music, old jazz, Nina Simone, Django Reinhart, you name it. It is all on youtube and Spotify nowadays…. wonderfull.
Crazy music too: Spike Jones, Die Hoffnung, Florence Foster Jenkins Etc.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Have you got a minute? I had a full and interesting life, with many amazing experieces, most good, some bad.
Often I do find that "fullness" in other people's lives too. Now I am 60+ and retired, i am very busy, professionally with my privat small business as a coach/trainer as well as working as a volunteer for international NGO's.
