About Me

I'm a Canadian student born I Brazil. I grew up in French Canada where I've had the opportunity to learn both French and English. I'm the dictionary definition of an art hoe. In my free time, I like writing (mostly poetry), drawing, making digital collages on Photoshop (https://www.instagram.com/imported.brazilian/ it's mostly old stuff and some pictures), and listening to obscure indie music. I also love photography. I have both an analog camera (a Pentax K1000) and a DSLR (Canon Rebel SL2).

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

Humans are social beings. We crave deep, long-lasting relationships. In the age of social media where we are constantly being stimulated and everything has to be done in a hurry, I think it is important to slow down and get to know people (truly know them). In general, we are surrounded by hundreds of people we "know," but most of the time we don't "know know" a single one of them. In other words, Couchsurfing is a place where I can get to meet new people and learn about them, about what makes them unique.
Also, since an early age, I have always been interested by other cultures and languages. My own cultural background surely has had an enormous influence. Indeed, I was born in Brazil in a region which was colonized by the Dutch for a few decades. While they were there, they had a pretty open settling policy. As a result, thousands of Jewish immigrants from all over Europe fled to this region. When the Portuguese regained control of the area, these newly settled immigrants had two choices: to convert to Catholicism or to flee. Many of them chose the latter, but several others fled from the coast to the Sertão (an arid region in Brazil) while others fled abroad. Interesting enough, a few thousands of them founded the Dutch settlement of New Amsterdam located in current Manhattan, NYC. Other than that, due to the colonial nature of the region, the culture is super super rich. There are influences from the Portuguese, Spanish, Indigenous, African (especially from Angola, Mozambique, and Nigeria, but it is difficult to know exactly due to the nature of slavery), Arab (especially from Syrian and Lebanese Christians), Jewish, and Dutch cultures. Not only that, but I also moved to the Province of Quebec (Canada) when I was little. While it's mostly a French-speaking province, we cannot but to help being influenced by the rest of Canada and the United States. As a consequence, I learned French and English in school, as well as Spanish. Since then, I haven't stopped trying to learn about new cultures and new languages.

tl;dr: To meet new people and learn more about different cultures, I guess 😅
