COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I couchsurfed in Scotland with a friend. We stayed with a young Scotch separatist couple who got us drunk, politely, and took us to a pub with a peat-burning fireplace, then led us home in a night so dark that it was only when I looked at the photos I had taken, with the flash on, the following morning, that I realized we'd been walking in a marsh. The town was called Oban and the fish and chips were delicious, though no one could understand my thick, foreign American brogue, except for the worldly twenty-somethings who could translate for the older generation. Couchsurfing's foundation on an older tradition of hospitality norms is appealing to me because it cuts through a lot of the bullshit of monetary transactions and teaches you to value others for their lived experiences rather than how much money their time is worth to you or yours to them.
