About Me
Hi! Hubert here.
Let me keep it simple - I earn a living as a software developer, and I'm grateful for the opportunities and freedom that this job gives me.
I'm convinced that you can learn about the world and yourself through films. I'm on a journey into the world of cinema, which, up until now, has mostly taken me through the realms of Asian cinematography. This journey has probably been my biggest passion of the past decade. There are still plenty of classics I haven't seen though.
My favourite type of holiday is a film festival holiday.
Sometimes, I feel that I've spent most of my recent years learning languages. Unfortunately, aside from Polish and English, only Japanese has somehow stuck with me (まだ下手なんですけど). Still, I love learning languages and consider a weekend spent drilling flashcards a perfect one. My recent quest is Portuguese - I've just started, though I feel I already understand more than I did after 3 years of Chinese.
During my university years, I fell in love with Mathematics. I love how it has taught me how to think and given me the tools to understand the world. Even though I haven't consistently kept in touch with it in recent years, I'm always happy and eager to come back. I enjoy coloring graphs, and I like doing it quickly.
I'm not super into partying - I usually prefer quieter environments though I'm also open to breaking out of my comfort zone from time to time.
Why I’m on Couchsurfing
Last year, my friend recommended Couchsurfing to me, and I became interested after hearing about his experiences. It seems like such a nice and natural way to get to know new people, new places, and new stories.
Around the same time, in October 2023, I moved from Warsaw to Valencia for half a year. Changing one's environment is always a great opportunity to start anew, try out new things. That's when I thought that I'd like to try Couchsurfing in Spain.
Very quickly it turned out to be a positively life-changing decision.

Music, Movies, and Books
This is so hard I'll leave this part for when I feel more inspired. Just the basics though:
FILM:
Wong Kar-wai is my whole personality. My take on Chungking Express vs Fallen Angels might be controversial.
BOOKS:
Has any writer ever done with any language things that Leśmian or Schulz did with Polish? Also, Lovecraft. Would love to be able to read Gabriel García Márquez without the need for translation someday.
MUSIC:
It's so hard to choose, so without any pretense of being well thought-out, let me pick something from the top of my recent playlist:
Japan: Morita Doji, Hako Yamasaki, Togawa Jun, Etsuko Yakushimaru, Midori
China: Faye Wong (this one is actually well thought-out)
Korea: Jeong Cha Sik
Latin America: Amanda Miguel, Marisa Monte
Rest of the world: Portishead
One Amazing Thing I’ve Done
Spent a week at Chungking Mansions.
Teach, Learn, Share
I can't cook but I can share my time with you (if I'm not working). Of course I'm also fine with not hanging out too much if you don't feel like it and prefer some alone time.
I would love to learn how to dance, whatever, wherever. I would appreciate any help in this area.
I'm studying Portuguese right now. It's still on a rather low level, but I'm serious about it so it would be great to do a small language exchange!
