I think Couchsurfing is a great way to travel with little money, make new friends, experience different cultures first-hand and see the places you visit from the perspective of a person actually living there. This is very different from conventional "tourism" and I think it's an amazing thing to do.
Climbed mount Fuji in Japan during the night and greeted the sunrise from the top - it was one of the most beautiful views I have ever seen.
