PHILOSOPHY
Ubuntu, pronounced [ùbúntú], is an ethic or humanist philosophy focusing on people's allegiances and relations with each other. The word has its origin in the Bantu languages of Southern Africa. Ubuntu is seen as a classical African concept. (Dion Forster 2006a:252)
An attempt at a longer definition has been made by Archbishop Desmond Tutu (1999):
Why I’m on Couchsurfing
HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING
I stayed several weeks in Nairobi on couches. So the least I can do and will do is offer my couch too! You can also use me as a helpdesk to get around in The Netherlands!
COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE
I couched more than 5 weeks in Nairobi. My stay there was part of my internship. My work there was not always easy, but CS opened doors for me. When I had a meeting at the Kenyan Organic Agricultural Network, they asked me in what lodge I was staying. When I explained the CS project and told I was staying in Kayole and not an expensive lodge. By showing my interest in their lives and cultures I gained "respect" and the meeting became far more informal and productive.
By CS I stayed in "rich" and "poorer" areas of Nairobi. This gave me a completer picture of life there. CS made it possible to come in closer contact with Kenyans and bridge the culture gaps.
