About Me

CURRENT MISSION

Make some coffee, make some beer, see Korea.

ABOUT US

Two wandering soul-mates who can't seem to sit still. 2015 finds us teaching English all the way up and out in the mountain/military town of Yanggu, Gangwon-do, South Korea.

We spent 2014 trekking through Mexico and Central America, and now we've got our own couch (actually, entire spare apartment!) to offer, while exploring as much of the country as we can when we're not teaching the babies.

See you soon,
Joe and Ashley

PHILOSOPHY

Every single word of Jack Keroac's 'On the Road.' And hell everything else the mad sad-eyed mystic ever threw on paper:
'It's just a story of the world and what happened in it.' (Desolation Angels)

Also Frank O'Hara:

oh god it's wonderful
to get out of bed
and drink too much coffee
and smoke too many cigarettes
and love you so much

(line from 'Steps')

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

While travelling we vowed to receive friends we've made on the road (through CS and elsewhere) and to pay everything forward and host as many people as we could when we finally found a couch to offer. And we did, in Korea!

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

Every surf brings new experience. Too much, too different, too amazing to relate in cold text on a page. Mescal in Queretaro, Coconut Water in Belmopan, Justin Timberlake in the back of a car in Mexico City, the list is ever-expanding.

Music, Movies, and Books

The 400 Blows. There is nothing else. Truffaut is God.

Okay, and Jonze, Anderson (both PT and Wes), Cuaron and [Sofia] Coppola.

Architecture in Helsinki. Kishi Bashi. B-52s.

Kerouac, Hemingway, Sendak.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I've walked through a surrealist sculpture garden that shot through me like lightning (Las Pozas in Xilitla, Mexico), seen films that have made me shake with tears (most of them children's films), gazed at human remains that paralyzed me with my mortality and stared into the horizon on a jungle road and felt infinite.

It's just a story of the world and what happened in it.

Teach, Learn, Share

How to brew a better cup of coffee. Step 1: Start a big fire. Step 2: Throw your Keurig and Nescafe into the fire. Step 3: Watch it burn. Then get started on REAL coffee.

Ashley can show you how to make some badass bread while teaching you about North/South Korean relations and the Bosnian War. I can jaw on and on about coffee, beer, movies until I'm blue in the face.

Countries I’ve Visited

Belize, China, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, North Korea, Panama, South Korea

Countries I’ve Lived In

South Korea, United States
