About Me

*Vaccinated*

Hey y'all!

I am living in Saigon for November 2018. Feel free to stay with me for a few days while I have my sweet pad here! I have had wonderful hosts in the United States, so now I am looking to give back!

My name is Jon Shmulovich and I truly consider myself a global citizen. Though, I have spent most of my life in the New Jersey, I have lived in Chicago for one year, and also Tokyo for a year! (I've also been to 23 out of Japan's 47 prefectures, which is more than a lot of Japanese people have visited!). When I travel I love to just walk around for hours, getting a feel for the vibe. I also like the know the history of the place, how it has become what it is today. I also have really come to appreciate a beautiful shot of nature and enjoy a good hike. And most importantly, I love the people I get to meet. Ultimately, I like to do anything that allows me to live like a local.

When I'm not on the road, I'm politically active and up to date. You'll also probably just find me watching tv or a movie (mainly comedy, action, or drama), or checking out a new restaurant. I love to discover the unique places. Even though I have lived in New Jersey for most of my life, I am still discovering some very unique spots that I never knew existed, even though I have been in their vicinity too many times to count (such as the famous Brazillian neighborhood in Newark, the Ironbound).

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I want to meet people who meet in the spot I'm going because that's the best way to live like a local. I also think it's the best way to discover all those hidden gems. Plus, it's just a damn good time.

Interests

Even if my profile seems generic, I can assure you that I am not generic. Even if you won't be able to define what is unique about me, it will be clear that I am a unique person for sure!

Music, Movies, and Books

I have been reading articles for a while, but I don't read too many books. I read The Guardian, The Atlantic, Politico, and stuff like that.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

When I went to Japan, I was interviewed by their biggest news network NHK, and they interviewed me about my class's visit to an Atomic bomb survivors speech in Hiroshima (they are called Hibakusha in Japanese). It was a very moving experience and I am very grateful that I got to be featured on TV. I'll tell another cool thing, because why not: I played in a blues band last year and we gigged all the time. I got to play with some crazy good players! I also met Action Bronson in Tokyo and was featured on his Viceland TV show for TWO SECONDS!!

Teach, Learn, Share

I can teach you about Japanese culture, American culture, Judaism, and general pop culture. As I'm studying data science currently, I can teach what I know about programming too! And, if we are ever in a new place, I will look it up and make it a learning experience for both of us :).

What I can't teach:
how to dance

What I Can Share with Hosts

I can teach you some Japanese, I can share some nice chicken and salmon recipes. I can also make things like pasta or french toast :). I can also probably find some great places you may have not known about (I often do this when I visit people in their areas. I'm just a good researcher/ scout!)

Countries I’ve Visited

Australia, Canada, Israel, Italy, Japan, Lithuania, New Zealand, Turkey

Countries I’ve Lived In

Japan, South Korea, United States, Viet Nam
