About Me

...And now I live in the USA. Did not see that coming!

In my experience, personalised messages get the best results on CS. To ensure that your request is not just a generic copy+paste job, please include the words "flying spaghetti monster" in your message. Hail science!

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

Each interaction I have as a result of Couchsurfing further confirms my belief that you'll meet some of the best people this way.

It's also a very rare phenomenon whereby any goodwill you receive from one individual will typically be paid forward to someone else. In the end, everybody wins!

Interests

Scuba diving, drumming, the outdoors, comedy, trying to skate, cycling/mtb/destroying bikes. I love carpentry, building things, and general tinkering.

I play drums. If you've got musical instruments, let's jam!

Music, Movies, and Books

Music: Death metal and grind. I won't inflict it on you unless you specifically ask. Aborted, Cattle Decapitation, Hate Eternal, Black Dahlia Murder, Cryptopsy, Rotten Sound, Brutal Truth, Agoraphobic Nosebleed...and so forth. Honourable mentions outside of that particular realm go to Queens of the Stoneage, The Dandy Warhols, NOFX, Frenzal Rhomb, Grinspoon.

Movies: I'm not really into movies that much, so it's difficult to name a favourite. However, if they made more films like the original Die Hard trilogy, the world would be a better place.

Books: anything to do with psychology, the human condition, or human nature. A good work of thriller fiction never goes astray either. Currently reading The Fountainhead by Ayn Rand. Just finished reading The Omnivore's Dilemma by Michael Pollan.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I've done heaps of stuff that I think was pretty amazing. Some of them are as follows:

-Stand up comedy. In Melbourne I entered an amateur open mic competition and got to the state grand final in 2012. This was achieved purely on the back of word-play jokes that would normally earn me a punch in the arm from anyone nearby. Somehow it translated to the stage much more readily than a social setting. I have since done it again and would love to perform regularly.
-Recorded and toured with my melodic metal band, Hours in Exile. We all got addicted to playing Heroin Hero, and the bass player choked on vomit. They're still trying to work out whose vomit it was (you can't dust for vomit).
-Took a job on the opposite side of Australia, away from friends, family, and the places I grew up. I discovered that in Australia, the west coast is the best coast.
-Skydiving over the coast of the Gascoyne region in Western Australia, where the desert meets the ocean.
-Quit the aforementioned job after two years and sold everything to go travelling. I haven't been back since.
- Had to bribe my way out of the clutches of Balinese police after being stung with a string of traffic offences...on a scooter!
-Married one of my hosts that I met through CS! My beautiful wife, Kara. Now we have a little girl together - now I have a justification for all the dad-jokes!
-Through my travels I've wound up in some interesting/funny/dangerous/scary/compromising situations, not all of which can be mentioned here. We can talk about it later.

I know that's more than one amazing thing, but I was feeling generous!

Teach, Learn, Share

I can teach you to drum. I would love to learn French and/or Spanish. I can teach you about Australian Rules football (AFL). I can share terrible puns with you and talk about stand-up comedy and stand-up comedians (one of my favourite forms of entertainment).

I usually show up with some sort of refreshing beverages for my hosts, and I am only too happy to help you drink them. As a host, I may or may not have beers in the fridge.

What I Can Share with Hosts

I can cook vegetarian meals, and I also do a first-rate job of cleaning. I'm handy, so if you've got anything that needs building or fixing I can get it done. If you like having a laugh, I can also (hopefully) make you do that too!
