COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

Our first experience on CS as hostees was indeed quite substantial also, in time and in space. In more than 3 weeks we had the chance to discover probably half of Suisse, that is Bern and Luzern, Valais and Neuchatel area, including an Italian Lago d’Orta delizio.
It was an unique, splendid and inspiring stroll, even surprisingly pleasant in some features. Perhaps we should confess now, it was a professional side of the story too, as some monitoring&evaluation were involved in relation with our work – consultancy endeavors here in Bruxelles. Anyhow, the semi-lucrative flavor definitely phased out when we met some wonderful, generous, intelligent, naturally interesting and beautiful people. And they represented the huge majority of our hosts, which was really incredible and somehow unexpected. Perhaps it was just our luck this time, but otherwise hope as social aggregator and motivation vehicle is totally underrated. The persons we’ve stayed with and spent sometime were indeed so different from many relevant points of view, making our appreciation so much more valuable.
We consider our adventure genuinely enriching and believe some of the CS good practice approaches would represent an asset for the philosophy, methodology, aiming and practice of EU programmes and projects.
The are also some pitfalls in CS generally functioning such as: guru pretending, cliché thinking, etc. There are probably due to human nature, ignorance and sufficiency, rigid thinking and misguiding of CS concept towards intolerance. There are also some pretenders always keen to patronize and lecture the others on various subjects such as: grouping, profile template, info requirements. From our part it is just a question of keep it simple, make it flexible and do it naturally.
The CS concept would prove its value especially in relation with returning to basics, in reevaluating human potential for involving in natural liaisons without any constraints but those of common sense. It could represent also a necessary experience nowadays in returning to nature, rediscovering tremendously valuable traditions, know-how and consistent exchange of knowledge. It is also realizing the decent human nature, slow food, the authentic cultural heritage specific for every area visited.
