One Amazing Thing I’ve Done
My experiences of Maha Kumbh Mela 2013
Never before did I have the chance to travel to Holy Ganga. However, this year was different. I set out for a pilgrimage to Varanasi and Maha Kumbh Mela at Allahabad – only happening every 12 years. Finally reaching the Sangam, the confluence of rivers Ganga and Yamuna as well as mythical Saraswati, I felt in high spirits. The amazingly peaceful atmosphere penetrated my entire body. There was an uncountable large number of devotees walking with me more than 3 km to reach Kumbh Mela grounds. For safety reasons no regular vehicle, nor bicycle rickshaw was allowed to come close to Sangam. Left and right of me there were big families and entire villages on their way to take the cleansing dip that is believed to wash away past sins. Many of these people were caring big pieces of luggage under arms or on their heads prepared to stay for several days. I was also very moved to see how many older people of delicate health and younger ones with severe physical disabilities have mobilized all their strengths to walk the miles towards Ganga. Now, I really believe in the power of faith.
Coming closer to the sacred river, I seen how well this largest gathering in the world has been prepared. Ganga’s shoreline was protected against erosion with sand bags laid out cascaded so that devotees could reach the water stepwise just like in Varanasi. Also to avoid muddy feet of all those millions of pilgrims, the river banks where covered with hay which has been exchanged frequently. Now, it was time for my holy bath. I undressed some of my clothes and immerged into the river to do good for my karma just as the many people around me. Some have done it in a silent praying mode, others in a loud and cheerful manner. There has been a spirituality I never experienced such intensively. Even across religions. I talked to Europeans just coming out of the water and feeling the same.
Sangam grounds provided quite a colorful sight. Apart from shelters of different size and purpose, the many drying sarees fluttered in the wind like big colorful flags. Plus, the people as such have formed a vivid and joyful beehive. Sadhus, nagas and other holy men of different kind added to this unique scene. Their devotional singing and religious discussions with pilgrims is still filling my ears. At night time, when the lights have been turned on, the sheer size of Kumbh Mela grounds became even more visible. It was breath-taking. I am very happy and lucky having had the chance to see and feel this festival. I wish every Indian at least once in a life-time to embark on such an incredible journey of faith and experience the same.
