About Me

My name is Sam, I'm 29 years old, and I live in the foothills of the Blue Ridge mountains in central Virginia with my partner Nara. I'm currently an apprentice for a master wood fire potter here in Virginia, and am working to learn the trade of functional ceramic artwork. I enjoy being outside; walking in the woods, a splash in the creek, or a bonfire with friends and family, it all works.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I'm here because I love to travel, but am hampered by the immense cost associated, and the bland uncultured view from many hotels. I love the idea of going to a place and getting a more connected and realistic view of where I am. I love meeting new people and hearing their stories and perspectives, and this seems a good way to initiate that.

Music, Movies, and Books

I swear no allegiance to any musical, cinematic, or literary genre; but will usually fall in love with any creative expression that feels honest. Not necessarily realistic, but represented in a way that I could see happening. Some of my favorites in music include The Beatles (obviously), Tool, Billy Bragg, Queen, Atmosphere, and Johnny Cash. Favorite movies; Snatch, The Man From Earth, most pottery documentaries... most documentaries actually, and all the Harry Potters. Favorite books, the Song of Ice and Fire series (Game of Thrones), and anything else by George RR Martin for that matter, Nature by Emerson, Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, American Gods, and so many others it would take too long to list. I love reading.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

A few years ago I participated in a ten day silent meditation retreat, it was extremely challenging. I had just gotten out of the Navy and became determined to learn something useful about who I was and how I could maybe do better. I think 12 people ended up leaving before it was over and I understand why, it's no small task to spend ten days with yourself. But I made it through with many other hard working meditators and apply the things I learned there most every day.

What I Can Share with Hosts

As much as I love a good conversation with new people, I also love sharing what I do with people. I enjoy showing off my ceramic work, as well as bamboo projects, and some wood work. I'm always on the lookout for new ideas and different approaches to crafts in general, so it's fun to show someone something they might have never seen before and then get an idea of how they would approach it.
