One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Diving is one of my greatest passions. I love the feeling of being in the water; the clarity, the feeling of weightlessness. The blue is somewhat indescribable, its more than just the colour. When you cannot see the sky nor see the ocean floor all but only see the sea (heh) it truly is a remarkable experience.

One time I was off the coast of Bali, down at the 25m mark suspended in the blue. There wasn't much life to see, so i was just enjoying the feeling of hanging there. The water was so clear, that it seemed i was trapped in a sapphire.

My dive partner started to tap his steel divers tool on his cylinder *TAP* *TAP* *TAP* , it got my attention and i turned. Somehow, out of this incredibly clear water a large dark shape had crept up on us and it was coming closer.

Initially it gave me a fright, but i soon relaxed when i realised that it wasn't anything menacing, but rather something quite majestic. It was a huge Manta Ray, possibly close to 7m wing tip to wing tip; Its mouth could swallow me whole.

It was coming straight towards us, probably just curious to see what these strange bubbling creatures were. As it drew even closer I started to get a little worried, if it hit us accidentally we would sure feel it. When it was about a meter away from us it suddenly arched back and did an incredible back flip, kind of like it was saying "Sup?" and then promptly swum off over our heads.

It was probably the most amazing thing I have ever witnessed, and most likely it was the moment i have felt most in tuned with the world.
Now i strive to regain that feeling.
