About Me

CURRENT MISSION

to be open to serendipity. also, to be outdoors a lot.

ABOUT ME

My name is Sasha. I really enjoy baking (especially bread and vegan cupcakes), swimming, and learning math. I think I want to be a professor when I grow up. By nature, I'm not a risk taker, but it's a character trait I'd love to change. Joining CS is part of my effort at doing so. Other efforts include quitting a boring but secure job to go back to school last year, and deciding late one night over gChat to backpack around Italy this summer with a newfound friend from school. Both of those risks worked out splendidly, so now I'm looking to take more!

PHILOSOPHY

I'm not sure. actually, maybe that in and of itself is a philosophy: I try not to jump to conclusions about things. life surprises you.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I've surfed a few times, all in the US, and mostly around the pacific northwest. Every experience has been great.

Also, in Vancouver, my host introduced me to the awesome CS community there, so I'm eager to find out what kind of community there is in Providence, and hopefully get involved in some events.

I've hosted a few times in Providence, now, and have had universally positive experiences with that as well.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

Surfing has been great. Couchsurfers are a pretty fantastic group of people, and I'm glad to get to know them.

Music, Movies, and Books

Books: I like everything, but I go out of my way to read books by: Ann Patchett, Terry Pratchett, Michael Pollan, Amy Bloom, Michael Chabon, Haruki Murikami, Neil Gaiman

Movies: I can recite The Princess Bride pretty much line for line. I'm also a little bit obsessed with Real Genius.

Music: I recently discovered and quite like the band Hey Ocean (when I see the ocean, that is how I greet it.) years of piano lessons left me with an abiding appreciation of classical music. when I'm having a bad day, I sing along loudly to ABBA, which inevitably puts a smile on my face. suggest something and I'll listen, and most likely, I'll like it.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Walked in a canopy walkway in the Amazon rainforest, ate piranha freshly caught from the river, and went swimming in the river with a capybara named margarita.

Teach, Learn, Share

I could probably teach you some math. I don't want to teach you the boring stuff you learned in high school, but I love talking to people about infinity (of various sizes) and weird paradoxes. (I have a friend who insists this kind of math is actually not math at all, it's philosophy. whatever it is, it is awesome.)

I know how to make pop-up cards and have taught several people.

I worked for years as a kids' swimming instructor.

I really really want to learn the banjo. I'd be ok with learning guitar too. I do play piano, so it shouldn't be *that* hard to pick up, right?

Also, I want to learn how to surf (the kind with ocean waves, not couches).

Countries I’ve Visited

Israel, Italy

Countries I’ve Lived In
