Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I traveled a lot alone and sometimes wished I made a local friend who could take me around. Understanding this, I would like to open my house to couch surfers and hope to couch surf when I travel.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

Did not exactly couch surf until I got connected with couch surfing. I hosted a guy from Iran and a girl from philipines before I was confident with the system. After which i couch surfed in the UK, PAris, Russia and Vietnam. All my experiences have been positive and meeting with locals should be the way to travel. I realised, trough couch surfing, you get to know the country alot more than just being a tourist living in a hotel and travelling by the book.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Travelled through Beijing China like a celebrity. Everyone wanted to take a picture of me and I could never understand why. I was asked to stand for at least 20 minutes while people took pictures with me in Tiananmen Square and on the Great Wall of China. Never did I realize the people in China were amazed with my beard and my turban.

I traveled to Amsterdam with my family (unfortunately-I was 17) and could not find a place to stay. We landed at night and thought of going to the city and finding for accommodation. It was peak period and all hotels were fully booked. We spent the night in the train station. Initially we were in the indoors but was asked to change to the outdoor station as they were closing the indoor station. It was cold and wet. Me and my dad decided to start walking around to find hostels at 5am the next morning. We were going to stay there for another 3 days so needed to get a proper accommodation. We kept walking through the streets several times that a man in his car realized that we looked lost. He asked us if there was anything he could help us with and we explained the entire situation. He made some phone calls and his friend got us a nice apartment in the middle of Amsterdam City. Problem was that it cost 300 Euros a night and my dad explained that we were looking for something a lot cheaper. The guy understood and actually allowed us to live there all 3 days for free!!! He also took us out for dinner and sent us to the airport on the 3rd day. Its been 8 yrs and my dad still keeps in touch with him.

I was on a train from Turin to Milan alone. Had a conversation with the girl who was sitting next to me, Catherine. She lives in Turin and teaches English in Milan. I told her that i was just going to spend a few hours in Milan and I was alone. She agreed to take me around Milan after her class which was only for 2 hours. We spent the day in Milan and took the train back to Turin together. We met in Turin a couple of times after too. The amazing thing was that 2 years later, I get a Facebook message from her saying she will be visiting Malaysia for a week with her mom. So I picked her up and showed her the city of Kuala Lumpur. Its amazing how small chats can lead up to incredible things.
