About Me

(Any kind of presentation is not my thing, really, as the words you use always confine and limit you to the idea of yourself or just present a bunch of formal characteristics that usually don't make sense. Not sure what is worse)

Anyway.

Hello, my name is Sonya (Sofya, Sof'ya) and I'm a 24-year old Russian, currently living in Spain. I did my BA in Literary Studies and Linguistics and MA in Arts and Culture. No wonder I like languages (speaking, listening, imitating), going to musea and film festivals, meeting new people and diving into new cultures, right? :) However, I'm definitely not against silence, contemplation and being on my own. Paradoxes are my love and damnation.

My interests are quite diverse, so we can potentially discuss and share our views on whatever you want, from the most difficult sound in Dutch for a foreigner to the art of the 20th century and peculiarities of Russian winters.

Time flies but one thing seems to remain the same (and so much better in Russian!): ищу места, в которых хорошо, и людей, с которыми счастливо (may be translated as: I am looking for places to feel good in and people to be happy with).

P.S. I'm not sure I'm ready for going to Iran in the near future, so if you want to offer a trip, you'd better choose another person, really.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I'm fond of the idea of crossing the borders, whether it be those of culture, personality, mentality, time or space. Couchsurfing seems to be a good option to blur the frontiers of everyday life for absolute strangers, as it helps to look at people's inside and dive deep into them, while making you vulnerable to their gaze as well. Yep, I definitely like that!

Music, Movies, and Books

Books. Frankly speaking, I prefer classics to contemporary literature. Among my favourites are V. Hugo's "Les Miserables", F. Dostoevsky's "The Idiot", W. Folkner's "Sound and Fury" and T. Wilder's "The Bridge of San Luis Rey".
Films: from "The Elephant Man" (1980, D. Fincher) to "The Island" (2006, Lungin) through some stupid comedies.
Music: no favourite genre, composer, group or singer; everything at once instead.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Two: I have gone to another city on foot and turned an aspen into an apple-tree.
