About Me

Hey folks, please bear with me as I figure out how to use this system. I know it reads a low response rate but I'm definitely responding and definitely would like to have people stay here, I'm just kind of slow on the learning curve on these things.

I've changed to "sometimes accepting" because I haven't yet figured out how to get alerted quickly enough but I'm looking here once a week so if you're planning a trip for the future - please don't shy away because of those faulty stats. Hoping to meet some of you soon!

CURRENT MISSION

London, UK - sometime in September - interested in finding the pranksters, oddballs and artists at play.

ABOUT ME

I think my friends would say that I'm kind of silly, smart but not necessarily intellectual, that I'm intuitive, curious and an explorer at heart.

PHILOSOPHY

I live life experimentally - try things, see if they work, readjust, try again. I consider myself an explorer, even when I'm sitting at home. There are inner and outer realms to explore. I'm agnostic religiously - personal mythology that is really just my own story, but I respect all other beliefs that do not end with proselytizing. I like helping people when I can but my life's work is more about experience and observation and perhaps storytelling, in the various ways I used to do so. I ask a lot of questions.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I'm interested in meeting people and beginning a new adventure myself.

Interests

I'm an artist - a sculptor, painter, installation artist. Life is always interesting to me. I'm a storyteller and love the company of others who are similarly minded. Experiences of all sorts inspire me. I read, paint, travel, sculpt, work as a guide in Phoenix, Arizona in the US, I love a good strong cup of coffee as sweet and creamy as I can make it. I hike and jog a bit (though I hate the latter and only do it when hiking is impossible) and workout fairly religiously now. I've taken up an actual meditation practice, though not with any spiritual affiliation. It's a sanity building process for sure.

Music, Movies, and Books

Recently I've been listening to Air's Moon Safari and Andrew Bird's Break it Yourself. I like a variety of different music: Leonard Cohen, KD Lang, Soul Coughing, System of a Down, Warren Zevon, The Band, Laurie Anderson, Jonathan Richman, Divine Comedy, Damien Rice - I've never been able to really put my finger on the qualities I like, and apparently neither has Pandora.

My favorite movie is still Harolde and Maude - I don't think it's necessarily a 'good" movie but favorites don't really need to be good. I also really liked American Beauty and Adaptation. I recently watched The Five Obstructions and adored it.

I tend to like art that makes me rethink things.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I crossed an amazingly long bridge in Manitoba in the fog - felt like I was walking into the abyss.

I had my shoes singed on the "Roaster Coaster" at Burning Man.

I leaned out into the ocean at a forty-five degree angle during Hurricane Elaina in Florida and let the sustainable wind hold me till I felt I'd probably pushed my luck with Mother Nature.

Went on the road with my kids when they were younger.

One - hahahah - I'm obviously not what you'd call a "rule-follower".

Teach, Learn, Share

I love people who are self-aware, curious, enjoy sharing information and are similarly explorers themselves. I like people who are very different from me as well as those with similar attributes. I'm a lot more reader and thinker than partier and so tend to get along best with other thinker/ reader type of explorers, but I'm not against a good time either from time to time.

I can teach a variety of artistic stuff - and I seem to be able to get at the heart of eliminating blocks in that realm. I'd love to learn to weld - that's on my list for this year, and I've decided to dedicate my first year of traveling to learning everything there is to understand about contemporary art so I'm reading a lot of books on that subject right now.

What I Can Share with Hosts

I'm a helper and a good guest. I clean up after myself and love to leave places better than I found them. I'm a good helper on projects and, in fact, love collaborating. I'm a builder of large-scale projects, and can use many tools, I'm curious and a good listener and love hearing people's stories and sharing experiences. I'm an organizational genius and have helped many creative people make sense of the chaos of their studios.
