About Me

Hello! In a nutshell, I have been highly nomadic for most of my adult life, but I am now stuck in one place, because I'm in the midst of a five year electrical apprenticeship. I am hoping that by hosting, I can bring some of the mystery of the world into my home. I have a couch to offer, and floor space in my living room. My place isn't big, but it's homey, and it's very near Discovery Park, which, is beautiful year round. I'm also a short bike ride from Pike Place Market or downtown, both almost entirely on interurban trails. There's a bus stop right across the street that will take you to the city center. I'm very near Ballard and Fremont too.

Unfortunately, I get up very early for work, and have to go to bed early too. I may not be able to host you, but I hope you'll ask. If nothing else, maybe I could show you where to get the most delectable donuts, or tacos, or Taiwanese desserts, or delicious microbrew, or chocolate mousse!

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I have always been a nomad and have always gravitated toward novel experiences. Us humans today are so used to punishing ourselves for seeking an exciting break from our routine. But isn't such monotonous daily life sort of unnatural? It's relatively new in the grand scheme of life on earth! We're developed, I think, to experience great variety in our day to day existence.

That said, I am presently landlocked. Perhaps you can bring the adventure to me.

Anyway, couch surfing seems like a natural extension of my curiosity, nomadic spirit, and wanderlust.

And I am NOT on Couchsurfing to have sex with strange men. There are far easier ways to do that. Sorry to disappoint!

Interests

I write. I'm in the process of polishing my first book. I'm also in the midst of an electrical apprenticeship through IBEW local 46. So, I'm grounded in the Seattle are for while. (Grounded? See what I did there?)

I also fire dance, regular dance, play music, sing, draw, tattoo, read, talk, sword fight (foam swords) play magic the gathering, go for walks, et cetera.

Solomon loves to make and collect tools and weapons right now. He's very proud of his Leatherman multitool and his Winchester pocket knife. And while we're both critical thinkers with lots of opinions about the sad state of the USA, he is also an avid and knowledgeable firearms enthusiast. He falls asleep to Dan Carlin's "Hardcore History" every night.

Music, Movies, and Books

Let's see. Right now I love Joanna Newsom above all else. Ani Difranco, Gillian Welch, Calle 13, Eric Clapton, Neil Young, James Taylor, Michael Franti, Dave Van Ronk, Nickel Creek, Medicine for the People, Blackalicious, Keller Williams, The Grateful Dead, Brandi Carlile, Townes Van Zandt, Jurassic 5, Grupo 5, and oh man, so many more.

Movies: Most of my favorite movies are based off of books. Such as Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, Like Water for Chocolate, The Reader, and The Unbearable Lightness of Being. I also Loved Waking Life, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Dead Man Walking (also based on a book), I Heart Huckabees, and many more. Love Scorsese flicks, too.

Books: So many favorites. Favorite of all time is We The Animals by Justin Torres. (UPDATE: Now, The God of Small Things and Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close are contenders.) I also Love Rodeo in Joliet by Glenn Rockowitz, everything by Lidia Yuknavitch, James Baldwin, Ceremony by Leslie Marmon Silko, Shards by Ismet Prcic, Pastoralia by George Saunders, Jesus' Son and Train Dreams by Denis Johnson (UPDATE: Oh man, his posthumous collection, The Largesse of the Sea Maiden SLAYED me. Also, his crime novel Nobody Move was great.) Tipping the Velvet by Sarah Waters, Fun Home by Alison Bechdel, and SO many more.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Sol and I were in Canoa on April 16, 2016, during the earthquake and all of Manabi crumbled around us. Watching the people there support each other over the next month and a half was the most powerful experience of my life.

Teach, Learn, Share

Teach: See hobbies. Also, when I was an undergrad, I worked as a writing tutor in the community college learning center and I loved it.

Learn: Working on my Spanish! What have you got to share? I'm a sponge.

Share: Electrical troubleshooting, food, music, dog snuggles, et cetera.

What I Can Share with Hosts

I'm happy to clean, care for animals, cook meals, et cetera. Not sure what's typical, but as a traveller, I always just consider that if someone is going to let me stay in their home, I am going to be utterly respectful, useful, and not under foot. Solomon is the same way. Need help with something? Try us! Especially gardening/farming/electrical stuff!
