Ankara may not be Turkey’s most famous city, but it is the capital and forward-thinking economic center of this great country. With a diverse culinary scene, attractive shops, and a generally relaxed attitude toward life, Ankara is a great place to just set out on foot and let the city take you where you want to go.
Great things to see here include the Atakule Tower, the Kocatepe Mosque, and the Anıtkabir, a memorial and resting place for the former president of Turkey. Step into history by visiting some of the many priceless archeological sites like the Ankara Citadel, the Roman Theatre, the Roman baths, and the Temple of Augustus. For an interesting and memorable trip outside of the city, take a bus to Alaca Höyük to explore what is left of a settlement that is thousands of years old. Ankara truly is a history buff’s paradise.
