Teetering on the southern coast of England is the city of Brighton, and it’s quite a bit different from other straight-laced English towns. Brighton is wacky, free-spirited, and all about having a good time. It’s where hard-working English folk come to cut loose and soak up the sun. Wander the alleys of North Laine, a shopping district teeming with great cafes, pubs, and boutiques selling artsy (and sometimes downright weird) goods.
Head down to the shore to walk along Brighton Pier to chow down at the food stands and ride the colorful carousel at the tip. For a bit of history, be sure to check out the Royal Pavilion, a former royal summer residence that can only be called “extravagant.” A bit of a road trip along the coast to the east will take you to Seaford, home of the stark-white chalk cliffs known as the Seven Sisters. They way these cliffs abruptly plummet into the sea makes Seaford look like it’s the edge of the known world.
