The birthplace of the Argentine flag, revolutionary Che Guevara, and football legend Lionel Messi, Rosario is justifiably proud of its contributions to Argentina’s legacy. The city itself is on the rise; the once-forgotten buildings lining the Parana riverbank have been converted into restaurants, skate parks, and shops, and the river’s beaches are popular hangouts in the summer. Stroll along the riverside and duck into one of its many bars to chow down on a lomito (steak sandwich) and sip a cold Quilmes (local beer). Be sure to see the historic part of the riverfront at the Parque Nacional a la Bandera, where you’ll find the tower and fountain of the city’s beloved Flag Monument.
Take a walk through the Parque Independencia or rent a paddle boat to explore the park’s lake. Here, you can also explore the Newell’s Old Boys stadium for free if there isn’t a match going on. This is sacred ground for many citizens of Rosario; the city is passionate about the club, and it’s where Leo Messi began his soccer career as a young boy.
