Just east of San Francisco lies Oakland, a quick and affordable train ride away. Start off at Lake Merritt in the heart of the city, where you’ll find locals lounging in hammocks, paddling in the water, or staying fit on the walking paths. Hit the trails in Redwood Regional Park to see massive redwood and Sequoia trees and enjoy a great hike in the shade.
Make your way to Jack London Square for the great restaurants and Beer Revolution, which features 48 rotating taps for an awesome refreshment break. While you’re there, check out the waterfront and the USS Potomac. This is Franklin Roosevelt’s presidential yacht (commonly referred to as the “Floating White House”), and a tour of the yacht gives visitors a look at some of the perks of being the President.
