Sobre mí

Hello there!

My name is Lachlan. I am a young Australian backpacker who is looking for places to stay for me and my girlfriend, Renee as we travel across Turkey and continental Europe. We are a sensible, quiet couple and will gladly keep to ourselves if that is what you wish. However, we can also be rather sociable and would be glad to get to know our host.

We will be abroad for several months with no real plan set in stone besides a general direction (Eastern Europe -> Western Europe) that we want to travel. For this reason we are very keen to listen to your recommendations of places to visit in your city or country. We are particularly interested in learning about the history, culture and politics of the area but also enjoy taking in the natural scenery through activities such as hiking or cycling. We also enjoy our food and would love your input on what and where to eat.

Thanks for reading my profile!

Por qué estoy en Couchsurfing

I won't lie and claim that my presence here is all about the ideals behind free travel and whatever else couch-surfing represents. I'm just an easy going guy who loves travel and loves meeting locals. I am also a poor student. It works well.

That being said, when I first heard of couchsurfing several years ago, the idea excited me. I find that most people tend to be dismissive, or skeptical about the idea of free accommodation or letting strangers into your home with no monetary compensation. I was on board from day one. Who wants to stay in a dirty tourist hostel with drunk tourists, separated from the place you are visiting culturally? Not me. Be it in Ghana or Germany, i'd much rather get to know the area through the locals. Couchsurfing provides a means to that end - and it's free!

Intereses

Well, my main interests are pretty much fancy book-learnin' type stuff. I love history, economics and politics. This interests align well with travel - I get to emerse myself in all three of these things when abroad. I'll basically enjoy any destination in which I can learn about these things, and I will probably try to talk to you about them at some point if you host me. Feel free to shut me up, I get excited.

Conversely, I enjoy taking in my surroundings. That can be through nice long walks through the streets, bike riding, hiking, eating a nice meal and having a drink. I'm not one of those tourists who have to hit up 17 museums a day to stay interested. I'd gladly spend an entire day wandering the streets and seeing what happens.

Also, I think I should include a footnote about my girlfriend, Renee, as she is currently travelling with me - she is very into books and movies, as well as local cultures. If you've read a book she has, she will launch into conversation like a speeding tractor into a barn.

Música, películas y libros

I personally like older music - right now I am listening to a lot of Johnny Cash, but I can go back further to Bing Crosby if I am in the right mood. I'm not a huge movie guy, but I do love tv shows. 30 Rock might be my favourite television show to date. As for books, i'm not really sure! I tend to prefer non-fiction to fiction. If the book is about a subject I am interested in, I can read for hours and hours straight. I tend to go for the historical books/biographies.

Algo increíble que he hecho

Lost a lot of weight, and kept most of it off for over a year. As someone who struggled with being an overweight child and teenager, managing to drop off all that weight has changed my life in so many ways. I also managed to write a play for school last year. The act of writing the play wasn't impressive, the fact that I managed to finish it when I hated it so much was. School takes the fun out of anything creative!

Enseña, aprende, comparte

Is this what about I can teach, learn and share?

I could probably teach you a great deal about Australia, if you are interested. I know a lot about modern Australian history, especially if it is political. I also tend to know a lot about world political history. I can give you a good run-down on Australian culture too.

Learn? So much. The history of your country. The politics. The culture. What I am actually supposed to put in this field instead of this stuff.

Share? Everything but my girlfriend. Sharing is caring, after all!

Qué puedo ofrecer a los anfitriones

Well, we are not very wealthy so we can't do a lot in the way of expensive gifts. Maybe we could buy you dinner or a few drinks? Perhaps we could cook for you? Renee and I would also be glad to share time with you. As our host, we owe you lots for your kindness.
