C.S. Lewis once wrote:

"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience. They may be more likely to go to Heaven yet at the same time likelier to make a Hell of earth. This very kindness stings with intolerable insult. To be "cured" against one's will and cured of states which we may not regard as disease is to be put on a level of those who have not yet reached the age of reason or those who never will; to be classed with infants, imbeciles, and domestic animals."

Here's how I'm thinking about the problem:
There are two ways to have more, take from someone else (expand) or use what you already have better (+efficiency).

I think figuring out how to make better use of what we have would be best, but spaceships are an okay idea as well I guess. We could also starve to death every once in a while, that would probably be easiest, but I doubt we'd be faithful enough to the cause to starve peacefully.

And hey I had a shower thought recently that provides another perspective on the problem:

When I was growing up I often heard this pseudo-saying that "those who can, do; those who can't, teach." then when I was studying mathematics people would ask me if I wanted to be a teacher and I would feel a little put down as a result (what would be the point of mathematics if all you do is either study it or teach it - obviously it has to have some causal impact somewhere) however when you put this perspective into the context of the awesome African saying: "if you want to go fast, go alone; if you want to go far, go together." then it starts to become clear how harmful it is to think of teaching as a lesser purpose. The people in history I look most up to are also the greatest teachers we have had.

I feel like our society only feels validated if it is going fast and it may mean we won't get very far.

Anyway, I believe in Honesty, Patience and Balance as the premise, method and goal of "good" behavior and I do my best to to make my behavior align with these beliefs. I'm sure you have your own religious framework and I'd love to hear about it, I sincerely hope we can get along!

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

Just cause.

Interests

I have almost all the interests, would love to have a conversation and figure out which ones we share but if you like moving (dancing, yoga, climbing, cycling, slacklining, hiking, etc.), media (reading, watching, listening), games, learning or building then we should have something in common besides travelling.

I'm also interested in improving my treatment of other people and finding more effective ways of communicating, please let me know if you have any observations I could benefit from.

Music, Movies, and Books

It's too long. I don't know what to say...

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I've done lots of stuff.

“Half the lies they tell about me aren’t true.”
—Yogi Berra

Teach, Learn, Share

I'd like to learn anything you can to teach but would especially appreciate cooking (I'm vegetarian) and discussing your "raison d'etre" (maybe we're karass).

I can learn yoga with you and I also know some math and computer stuff that no one is interested in but if you are then it's probable that I can answer questions.

We can share a meal or a conversation maybe exchange card games or something.

What I Can Share with Hosts

I only have myself so all I can offer is knowledge, manual labor and good humor (the mood, I don't presume to know your taste in jokes).

Sometimes I give gifts but don't be fooled! They are self serving ... I probably just need backpack space ^_^
