Sobre mí

CURRENT MISSION

To live life fully in whatever manner that may be. To treat others as I would have them treat me; to be a friend to good people.

ABOUT ME
Status update: I married a wonderful woman and now have 3 cats (if you're allergic to cats my place may not be right for you).

I've never been somewhere that I didn't find something beautiful. I love animals, domestic and wild. I've experienced Forrest Gump-like moments in history. I'm mostly laid back but can be very animated when the right moment occurs as Theo found out when I caught a cicada in the mangroves.

PHILOSOPHY

Still trying to figure out if it's better to know more and more about less and less or to know less and less about more and more...always the conundrum.

Por qué estoy en Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I hope to host people from anywhere and of any background for up to 3 days, maybe more if the situation permits. I am mostly familiar with the Eastern Sierra, the deserts and mountains of southern California, but I also know a bit about NYC, and the Grand Canyon. I'm happy to make recommendations about these areas. I grew up in Detroit and know where you can find the best Coney Island there...but other than that, I don't recommend my old neighborhood unless you are stopping in for Mexican food or immersing yourself in misery.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

2009 was my induction to the CS community and I've already had some fantastic experiences. What a great time Costa Rica and The Bahamas were! Surfed with George in Monte Verde and Trevor down in Sierpe, CR. Theo in The Bahamas helped me pack in as much fun as possible in ~48hrs. I can't wait to go back!
I also owe Angela in Germany a huge thank you and will never forget how she made my stay for the 20th anniversary of Nov 9 as wonderful as a guest could dream.

Intereses

Naturalist activities like birding, photography, meeting strangers and departing as friends. I also love good (and bad for you) food, wine, and beer!. While in college I learned to brew my own but usually gave away more than I drank. I enjoy museums, architecture, the sublime and the ridiculous. I even watch a little tv, with GOT, Orange is the New Black and True Detective being about the only consistent programs these days.

Música, películas y libros

In no particular order and with many, many worthy titles not included...Calvin and Hobbes, A Sand County Almanac (Aldo Leopold), Shawshank Redemption, Beethoven's 6th and 9th, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Offspring, 500 Days of Summer, Indigo Girls, Amelie, Pan's Labyrinth, Angela's Ashes...and thanks to Trevor De Sierpe, "The Alchemist" which all CouchSurfers should read (easily done on a 2 hour flight).
I can listen to just about anything, I prefer indie film and while my job requires lots of scientific journal reading, I try to expand my horizons when I can.

Algo increíble que he hecho

The night the Berlin Wall came down, I witnessed the first East Berliner, with her own persistance and the urging of West Berliners, cross through Checkpoint Charlie while the East Berlin Guards scratched their heads in bewilderment. I knew the world was changed forever that night.

Enseña, aprende, comparte

I can teach some bird calls, how to catch a small lizard with a piece of (long) grass, how to tie a bowline, how to avoid ticks, how to make your thumbs twiddle in opposite directions (it's harder than you think ;-)
On the less practical side, I guess I know a little about avoiding the creatures that cause disease in humans, but who wants to know that??

If you can teach or show me: a few new words, English or any other language (I just learned a new one: "alexithymia"... definitely not me!), how to make a good drink, a good place to snorkle, the names of the constellations, how to tie my shoes...never mind that one, I'm switching to velcro ;-)...I'll be a better person for it. Oh yeah, I have a harmonica I'd like to learn to play...help?

The world we live in is like a spider's web. We are all connected. I've believed this intuitively since childhood. Spreading smiles is a good starting place to keep the web intact. CouchSurfing spreads smiles around the world.

If you visit and I have the time, I'll be happy to take you camping (we can hoot for owls) or on a day trip to the mountains or desert (I know where the scorpions hang out)...maybe even the beach, each of those is no more than 1.5 hours from my place.
