About Me

About me? I'm no good at writing about myself but here I go...

I live in a yurt on an organic farm in the Annapolis Valley in Nova Scotia. I'm trying to live as simply and sustainably as possible, and grow as much of my own food as I can (and work with neighbours for what I can't grow). One of my passions is saving and maintaining heritage vegetable seeds, our crucial bank of agrarian biodiversity. Check out annapolisseeds.com... my website with lots more info on the farm.

What else....I'm a vegetarian, an environmentalist (in case you couldn't tell!), I love learning from everyone I can and am more than happy to share that knowledge.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

Currently, I occupy people's otherwise empty couches. there's often floorspace in the yurt if you ever want to visit little Middleton!

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I had an awesome time couch surfing in France a few years ago. I remember I went into Bordeaux not knowing a soul and left three days later leaving behind a bunch of new friends, it was a great experience!

Interests

Gardening, weeds, insects, hiking, birdwatching, photography, reading, philosophy, reading about philosophy, learning, kayaking, scything and exploring new places! I think making compost is one of the deep, complex pleasures in life...

Music, Movies, and Books

Books: A few authors that have had an impact on my life: John Muir, Henry David Thereau, Masanobu Fukuoka (One Straw Revolution), David Suzuki, Sandor Katz (Wild Fermentation), Ben Law (Woodland Way)… and I can't forget Siddhartha by Hermann Hesse

Music: Nahko Bear, Xavier Rudd, Bob Dylan, Rising Appalachia, Bob Marley, Fleet Foxes… and I always love introducing people to our awesome local East Coast music scene!

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Sleeping on the actual continental divide in Colorado was an interesting night. I was hiking in the alpine above the tree line when a surprise lightning storm rolled in. I was forced to set up shelter on the only remotely flat surface nearby… a narrow ridge in the saddle between two peaks. You really don't want to be stuck above tree line in a lightning storm… it's just never a good idea. But with nowhere to go I just had to ride it out. The only thing keeping my tent from blowing away that night was my own weight inside! By dawn the storm had passed, and I broke my way through the layer of ice that now covered my tent door to see the most beautiful sunrise.

Teach, Learn, Share

I love sharing knowledge about the wild plants in our Acadian Forest, and exploring some of the special wild spots in our South Mountain neighbourhood. Depending on the time of year there's mushroom foraging, river and lake kayaking and snowshoeing to be had.
