About Me

I'm an amateur endurance walker, who enjoys organizing winter festivals, helping students and adults discover careers, and participating in community events. I'm excited to meet residents in communities across Alabama, Mississippi, and Tennessee as I embark on my 400-mile solo walking journey.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

Walk to Freedom is a symbolic 400 mile solo-walking journey that will connect the historic Civil Rights Trail from Selma to Montgomery, trace the Underground Railroad and conclude at the National Civil Rights Museum in Memphis, Tennessee where I’ve been invited to join in remembering the 50th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s assassination.

The idea behind Walk to Freedom, as I’m calling it, came to me after I finished walking across Massachusetts last summer and sensed that I needed to keep going. I heard the whispers of our ancestors in the words of the great Underground Railroad conductor Harriet Tubman repeating: "Keep going, if you want a taste of freedom, keep going!”

Music, Movies, and Books

Last November I went to see an exhibit in Montreal of the late Leonard Cohen. Since then I've been listening to a lot of his music and other artists of 60's, and 70's. I particularly enjoy the bands with great horn sections.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Bused across the Andes between Chile and Argentina.

Teach, Learn, Share

On this trip I hope to connect with community groups, churches, and libraries to talk about my walk the Black Belt and the Mobile River basin areas.

What I Can Share with Hosts

I'm happy to share some of my personal life, my travels, why I enjoy walking versus bicycling, how I'm trying to move away from the 9-5 work desk to incorporate more nutritious movement in my life.

Countries I’ve Visited

Argentina, Australia, Canada, Chile, Malaysia, Singapore
