About Me

Hi! welcome to my profile. It is quite difficult to define yourself, right?

I am historian, educator, journalist, philosopher, filmmaker, and environmentalist.

I have been traveling for more than 70 countries in the last years and now I am enjoying a peaceful life in Cuenca York, where I work as professor.

my personal website is: www.javiercolladoruano.com

I think the only true voyage of discovery would be not to visit new landscapes, but to possess other eyes, to see the universe through the eyes of another, of a hundred others, to see the hundred universes that each of them sees..

One nice example of those universes is, without doubts, learning about the gastronomic secrets from other cultures... ;o)

But I also love the good books, outside sports, animals...

“Simplicity, patience, compassion. These three are your greatest treasures. Simple in actions and thoughts, you return to the source of being. Patient with both friends and enemies, you accord with the way things are. Compassionate toward yourself, you reconcile all beings in the world.” | Lao Tzu, Tao Te Ching

PHILOSOPHY

Life is just a game... then Carpe Diem! ;)

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I think that CS project is a nice experience that everybody should know, because you really feel like a volunteer all the time with people you didn´t see before. That´s mean you can help them showing your city, sharing your food or your house, going out just for a beer while you are talking about the life... and for those reasons I think CS is a tool in my life to change my little world, just helping the others!

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

after 13 years having experiences with CS around the world, I could say this experience changed my life! ;) and if you wanna know why, you gotta start to read all the references... and then you will understand! :P

Interests

I love to travel the world to discover new countries, their fauna and flora, meet new people and learn about their culture and way of life. My trips also give me opportunities to practice some of my favorite activities: wildlife watching, photography and outdoor activities (hiking, cycling, swimming, diving, parasailing...)
I am also very much a city guy as I've always enjoyed living in the center of big cities (New York, London, Tokio, São Paulo, Mexico DF...). I enjoy dining out, watching movies, theater plays, comedians, attending music concerts and meeting friends...
I am also interested in all forms of arts (painting, literature, music, cinema, cooking etc...)

Music, Movies, and Books

- Music: reggea, rock, punk, metal, hip-hop...

- Books: High Fidelity (Nick Hornby), Critique of Judgement (I. Kant), The death of God (Nietzsche), The Capital (Karl Marx), Creation-evolution controversy (Charles Darwin), Política e educação: ensaios (Paulo Freire). Manifiesto of Transdisciplinarity (Basarab Nicolescu).

- Movies: Invisibles (of Javier Bardem), An Inconvenient Truth (Al Gore), The Godfather, Cidade de Deus (drama film from Brazil)...

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I have visited 73 states... but I could highlight the Kruger National Park in South Africa, scuba diving in the Philippines and Indonesia, the Amazon in Peru...

Teach, Learn, Share

If a man is called to be a streetsweeper, he should sweep streets even as Michelangelo painted, or Beethoven composed music, or Shakespeare wrote poetry. He should sweep streets so well that all the hosts of heaven and earth will pause to say, here lived a great streetsweeper who did his job well, because he did it with love.

Martin Luther King

your watch is Japanese, Italian your dress, your Colombian coffee, your Moroccan holiday, your car from Germany, British your music, your French pen, your Dutch beer... So why do you say that your neighbor is a foreigner?

some transcultural and transhumanist person?

What I Can Share with Hosts

Experiences, good talks, reflections about life.... with a beer or a cup of wine it became more interesting..
