One Amazing Thing I’ve Done
While studying abroad in Costa Rica, my host family and I went to go visit one of the volcanos. Along the way we saw some farmers out working with their bueyes (oxen) in the field. We decided to pull over to get pictures of the painted yokes that the farmers were using. We ended up talking with the farmers for nearly an hour as they explained to me, the ginga, their entire process of farming. To me this was a great time where I got to speak and get to know the local ticans- about their lives, joys and hardships. Building the relationships with anyone we met along the road soon became normal, but this particular time stuck out because of the excitement the farmers had when I showed interest in learning about them and their lives.
When I was in China, a group of six of us, including myself, decided to go on a nice bike ride through the mountains of Guilin. None of us spoke Chinese, but we figured that in our six mile bike ride to a stone bridge and back we wouldn't have a problem. We made it to the bridge, with only once having to stop, ask for directions and turn around. Once at the bridge we took some pictures and decided to cross over and bike some on the other side of the river. Twenty three miles later we ended up making it back to our hotel, throughly cover in mud. Once we had crossed over we couldn't find another bridge to cross the river, and since we didn't speak chinese we had a hard time asking for directions. We ended up biking through rural towns and through rice paddies trying to find any place to cross the river. Finally after three or so hours we found a bridge that lead us across the river some ten or eleven miles down from where we started. The adventure of being lost, not knowing anything, encountering new people and exploring the land left a memorable impression on me.
