CURRENT MISSION
conduct a comprehensive, cross-cultural survey of sea shanties
ABOUT ME
I've been studying all my life, and now that I'm done, I'm not really sure what to do with myself. So I'm just trying to meet people, have a good time, learn, annnnd, figure out the next step, whether it be a career, grad school, or running away to join the circus. I think I'd have fun watering elephants.
PHILOSOPHY
prayer's all well and good, but eventually you're just going to have to get that spider out of the bathtub yourself.
Why I’m on Couchsurfing
HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING
I'm probably am not going to have many opportunities to travel in the next year, so I guess I'm trying to bring the rest of the world to me! Unfortunately, I can't host because one of my current roommates is really not ok with the idea, but I'd love to grab a drink, explore the city and swap travel stories.
COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE
None so far. A good friend told me some great stories (and some horror stories) which made me curious about it all.

Music, Movies, and Books
so much. my absolute favorite books are fiction, some of them incredibly profound like anything by Alice Walker, and some of them less obviously profound like Peter Pan, The Jungle Books, Anne of Green Gables, i.e., things most people would just think of as silly kids books.
i'm into several types of music, ranging from folk music (Brandi Carlile, Dar Williams, Natalie Merchant) to dubstep (Borgore, Professor Green). I'm actually just starting to get into dubstep so I don't know it very well. I have to say that I do like the top 40 trash, and I don't care that it's trash--it's amazing. No matter what you're doing--washing dishes, cleaning your room, painting ceilings--turn on a top 40 station and you are having a parrrr-tay.
as for movies, i like silly movies. Honestly, I have *terrible* taste in film. I have almost no patience for artistic films; a movie for me needs to have pretty people, nice clothes, little to no death and have everything turn out well in the end. If there are swords, ships, pirates, horses, camels, mountains, and the like then so much the better. I know that I'm missing out on a lot of good film this way, but if I want to be depressed I can just turn on the news.
One Amazing Thing I’ve Done
i sailed from Tahiti to Hawaii on a 134 foot brigantine, the Robert C. Seamans. it was 6 weeks, and 3000 nautical miles on the open ocean.... absolutely nothing like it in the world.

Everyone should know how to find North. If you have a clear view of the night sky, look around until you can find the Big Dipper, then trace a line from the pouring end of the scoop (i.e., the two stars farthest from the 'handle' of the dipper) into the night sky until you reach a small star sort of set apart from any others. If you have a very good view of the night sky, you might realize that this star is the last one in the handle of the Little Dipper. This is the North Star, Polaris, and it is close enough to due North for most purposes. If you're doing hard-core maritime navigation, you'll need to do more than just identify the star, but if you're just wandering lost around a city then it might be enough to help you get your bearings.
(note, this only works in the Northern Hemisphere. :P )
