About Me

Currently a permanent traveller, so can't host unfortunately, but I always enjoy meeting new people. I am currently in Scotland.

I grew up on an island in the middle of the ocean, in New Zealand, a long way from any other country. So I grew up hearing stories and the news from around the world, but i'm not sure I really understood any of it. For example, the second time I left New Zealand, I flew into Santiago, Chile, a city which has more people than all of New Zealand. I had no way to even imagine what that would be like. So now I travel the world, and occasionally I am lucky enough to find other things I couldn't possibly imagine. The Atacama desert in bloom, shooting stars in the night sky in Alaska, the Andes mountains, dildos tied together with string and thrown over the powerlines all through the city of Portland, Oregon.

My current travel goal is to make it to every continent. I've made it through Australia, and north and south America so far. Just finished three months in Chile, living in hostels and working as a engineer for agricultural equipment.

Planning to travel through Europe in 2016, when it gets a bit warmer in the northern hemisphere.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I couchsurf to meet new people, and to take some of the loneliness out of travel. I traveled for a year for work, staying in hotels, not knowing any locals, and it was incredibly isolating. I always loved it when I met other travelers and former travelers, there were always the most amazing stories, and the willingness to accept someone you've just met and go do things with them is amazing.

As i've explained it to my friends, when you rely on the kindness of strangers, you learn to not be a dick. Travelers and former travelers have always been amongst the kindest, most accepting people i've ever met. And because people have helped me so much in my travels, I try and pass that on whenever I can, and couchsurfing is a great way to do that. I also find that whenever I show people around, it makes me explore and appreciate my own area so much more.

Interests

I love to read, dance, play games, and get lost. I also love to work with gardens and orchards, I think one of the downsides of travelling so much is not being able to have my own gardens and plants.

Music, Movies, and Books

Terry Pratchett, Tom Robbins

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I was the sober driver for a new years party in Chile, South America. It was in a random small town, but when we got to the party there were about 2000 people packed into a dirt-floor stadium, with a giant DJ stage. That was the night I learned that in South America midnight doesn't matter. You have to party until sunrise! I danced until 8 in the morning, absolutely sober, with just enough spanish to say that I didn't speak spanish. Hands down the best night of my life, and the night that really taught me that music and dancing are truly international, and will make you friends no matter the language barriers.

Teach, Learn, Share

I am learning German and Spanish, and always get really lazy whenever I don't actually have to speak the language all the time, so any help is great. I'd love to share a conversation about just about anything, or a night dancing.
