About Me

I'm a lifelong wanderer who has visited thousands of places and stayed for some time or worked in many others. Sometimes traveling for work in various professions (sales, migrant work, tourism, etc). I've lived all over the US (been to all 50, prbly worked in more cities and states than most of my countrymen have visited) and a number of places abroad. Played music, toured on several continents starting bands in a few of those cities I stayed in. Lots of hitchhiking, urban camping and busking when on a budget. Lots of wild stories from the road, but I've always managed to remain safe even through the toughest times.

I live to eat new, exciting dishes, chase live music and travel non stop. I like to laugh and tell jokes/limmericks. I'm deadly serious about the things I love and passionately pursue them, but have little tolerance for people with extreme, rigid views and no sense of humor or empathy for others.

I've been a homebrewer since the late 90s. Fermenting all sorts of stuff. Ciders, meads, country wines and all sorts of fermented food stuffs and other beverages. I also love to make homemade Polish Krupnik liqueur. Not a heavy drinker but when in the mood I enjoy sharing with pals and sampling interesting new concoctions, local specialties, etc..

When I'm traveling in the States I run a small business from my van selling vintage and handmade belt buckles to support my nomadic lifestyle. I love van life and have lived in more vans than houses over the years.

In 2013 I bought an abandoned house, spent a few years renovating and turned it into a guest house for friends, family, courchsurfers (made some good friends there), Airbnb-ed it to earn extra cash and yes, I lived there occasionally when I wasn't out roaming the world or living in another place seasonally.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

To meet interesting people I would otherwise not have an opportunity to meet while I'm traveling.

I was couch surfing long before there was a website dedicated to it, when you only had a scrap of paper with a friend of a friend to contact or you met a like minded soul on the road who would invite you in.

I had a couchsurfing account for 20 years but was unable to log in after covid for some reason, perhaps the paywall. It's unfortunate because I lost a lot of connections with amazing people, as I'm not on social media, but new opportunities await! If any of my old pals are out there, drop me a line so we can reconnect.

Music, Movies, and Books

Music: Love ❤️ music! I'm a fan of too many genres to name all of them here, but 30s jazz/blues/ragtime, 50-60s RnB/soul/rock, punk/metal are what I grew up listening to. I've been a musician and involved in the underground music scene all over the world since I was a teenager. In my youth I also was a DJ on college radio, had a few pirate radio shows in my day and also spin records occasionally in my neighborhood when I'm able to.

Movies: I've been a fan of film my entire life. Worked in a few independent theaters and also attended film school for a short time, producing a few Short films. I've been a VHS collector since my teens, like to trade & search junk shops for odd stuff. I like sci-fi/ fantasy, movie classics (screwball, film Noir, musicals, drama, pre-code), '80s comedy (sex romps, anything weird), Kung fu/Samurai/Shinobi, cult films, action thrillers, road movies, And of course music related subjects (incl biopics, rock and roll stories, documentaries, etc)

Books: the library was my safe space as a child and one of my first stops if I stayed in a place for more than a few wks to get signed up for a card. I like to read a lot of non-fiction about music, musicians, film, actors, artists and other creatives, other history/biography, mycology, travel narratives, etc. for fiction I enjoy from light pulp to more engaging things that get me thinking or entertain me. The genres I like are, but not limited to sci-fi/fantasy, classics, mystery, mythology. I also like philosophy and poetry to some extent and will read pretty much anything as long as it's good. Grew up on Ross Macdonald, Piers Anthony, Tolkien (who hasn't) Lawrence Millman, Louis DeBernies, whatever is at my bedside and keeps me reading, entertained or learning. From serious literature to light hearted humor. Always looking for a good recommendation if you have one or a book to share.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Just one? I've played pirate songs at a pirate themed wedding on a boat off the coast of Maui, eating pu pus on the poop deck! I was invited to join the host of a Chinese/Malaysian travel TV show, who I met on couchsurfing, on his motorcycle journey exploring the countryside of peninsular Malaysia. Even was featured singing/playing my original material and in the soundtrack for the program. I was lucky to avoid danger once because my bandmates who I visited often awoke one morning to police surrounding their apartment bldg and arresting their downstairs neighbor for being a serial killer, in my hometown! (Not exactly something I've done but an amazing, yet unsettling experience I had) I've been a beer tour guide, worked for a dancing Andalusian Horse show, rubbed elbows with celebrities and slept under bridges with hobos. Graced mansions and laid my head to rest next to Street kids in Southeast Asia and feel privileged to do it. I've not stopped traveling my entire adult life so I have a lot of wild stories from funny to inspiring, dangerous to heartwarming. Ask me about it..

Teach, Learn, Share

I like to share, teach and learn songs/music. Whether sharing my favorite obscure records or singing and playing. I've also taught many people how to play an instrument. Whether friends or the occasional student. I'm not an expert on any subject but come from a family full of teachers and enjoy learning new things every day so I am knowledgeable on many subjects or willing to learn new things from people, books and especially personal experiences
