ABOUT ME

Mali is a land of many cultures and creeds; a dash of life and action and heritage and history that’s sandwiched between the rolling Sahel and the endless dunes of the Sahara Desert.

From the salt-caked outposts of Taoudenni in the north to the throbbing market town of Sikasso in the south, the lion-spotted reaches of Boucle de Baoulé in the west to the protected swathes of Ansongo in the east, there’s everything from time-stood-still tribal villages to groaning camel caravans to experience here.

Meanwhile, the capital at Bamako is surely one of the continent’s most enthralling.

Beer bars and local music dives erupt between the traffic-choked streets; bazaars and brilliant markets pop up on the corners.

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

by a friend from France who I granted one month accommodation for free with me in my spare room, and we shared everything together, that is how he talked me about the website and I found it interesting.

#Mali is not a place to go for safaris, wild animals or natural forests. what it does have is a variety of surreal landscapes, beautiful artwork, unique mosques made entirely of mud, pink sandstone desert dunes that look like scencs from lawrence of arabia. all this and the change to say that you've been to timbuktu and back.

Unfortunately, mali is rapidly being swallowed up by the desert and is still suffering from the after effects of a drought of biblical proportions. this has contributed to making it one of the five poorest countries in the world with a high infant mortality rate, extensive malnutrition, low levels of literacy, and a short life expectancy. malians are by nature and circumstance a strong enduring race. their passion for their homeland and traditional way of life may now be sustainable, thanks to the discovery of deposits of gold potentially large enough to left the country out of its economic doldrums.
All of these popular tourist spots are more than six hours away from Gao, but many of these places can be visited, along with Gao, in a great week-long or 2-week circuit.

Bamako - Mali's Musical Capital City
With over one million inhabitants, Bamako is Mali's most populous city. There is always something going on in Bamako, a city that is especially well-known for a hot live music scene.

Just think - Salif Keita, Habib Koïté, Tiken Jah Fakoly, Baba Salah, and Oumou Sangaré all call Mali home. It's not unheard of to catch one of these fantastic performers at the music clubs that dot Bamako.

Bamako also has a wonderful National Museum, a bustling artisanal marketplace, and many European-style and African restaurants. Add onto this, world-class accommodations at hotels, like the Sofitel, Kempinski, and Salam, and you can easily see why a visit to Bamako is nice for any vacation.

Ségou - The Heart of Bambara Country
Ségou, the site of the ancient Mandé Empire, is a quiet and charming Niger River town. Located only three hours from Bamako, Ségou is a bustling regional capital.

Ségou has a wonderful mud-cloth (called "bogolan" locally) workshop that tourists can visit and is also well-known for producing creative clay pots and vessels. Visitors can combine a Niger River cruise with a visit to a pottery village.

Additionally, the Festival Sur Le Niger has burst prominently onto the Malian music scene in the last two years. With concerts on a barge in the Niger, the festival is wonderfully produced by a Malian-Dutch couple that own a hotel in town. In 2006, the festival attracted the biggest West African music stars, like Habib Koïté, Tiken Jah Fakoly, Baba Salah and Sekouba Bambino. The festival is held the first weekend in February. Djenné - The Largest Mud Brick Building in the World
The mud mosque at Djenné is quite simply unforgettable. It is the largest mud-brick building in the world and a stunning wonder to be seen. Built in the Sudanic-style, this exact mud mosque dates from the early 20th-century, although the site held a similar older mosque before this one.

Non-Muslims are not permitted inside Djenné's famous mud mosque

Lucky visitors may be able to visit during the annual "re-mudding" of the mosque. As can be imagined, mud washes away during the rainy season, so every year the entire town comes together to re-mud the mosque. Check with the OMATHO-Mopti bureau or with tour operators for details. The "remudding" depends on annual water levels but generally occurs somewhere between February and April every year.

Mopti / Sevaré is the easiest jumping off point to visit Djenné. It is quite easy to rent a 4x4 in either of these towns for a day-trip to Djenné. For the budget-oriented travelers, public transportation to Djenné is a bit sparse, except on Mondays, which is Djenné's normal market day. Pick up a "neuf-place" Peugeot from Mopti to Djenné on Mondays and return the same day.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

go in the desert for picnic alone with your camping tent sitting under the stars in the middle of nowhere; forget about all your problems and stress for some times, making things clear in my mind. a kind of deep meditation or yoga devotion.
