About Me
Welcome to China—and especially to my hometown, Xi’an, one of the oldest cities in the country.
My name is Abby Wang.
I grew up in Xi’an and later traveled extensively, moving from my hometown to Beijing for college, then studying in Oxford in the UK and Chicago in the US. I lived in the United States for 15 years, and now I’m returning home to reconnect with the rhythm of life in this historic city.
Here in Xi’an, you’ll find everyday moments beneath the ancient city walls—grandpas playing mahjong in the shade, neighbors sipping tea along the streets, and a pace of life that blends history with warmth. I’m a very outgoing person and always happy to meet new friends.
My journey from East to West has broadened my horizons and deepened my appreciation for different cultures and lifestyles. I hope I can help you experience Xi’an not just as a tourist, but as a local—showing you how we Xi’an locals truly live.
I also host fun, hands-on cultural experiences where I teach traditional Chinese drawing and calligraphy, and share the stories and meaning behind each brushstroke.
Calligraphy is also a really special gift to take home—it’s made right here in Xi’an, and even better, it’s something you create yourself. Not a typical souvenir, but a personal piece that carries your experience, your memories, and a little piece of this city with you.
And if our paths cross again one day, I’d love to host you in Chicago too—so we can keep sharing stories and cultures together 😊
Why I’m on Couchsurfing
You rub elbows with so many people every day. Some strangers might become friends, or even confidants. That’s why I never turn my back on a chance to meet someone new.
This is why I’m on CS—meeting people, listening to their life adventures, and discovering different ways of living. Wherever I travel, I don’t want to be just a tourist. I want to live like a local, even if it’s just for a short time—to see what people see, eat what they eat, and feel the rhythm of everyday life.
That’s also why I want to share the most real, unfiltered Xi’an with you—not the postcard version, but the city as locals truly live it.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done
I spent an entire afternoon on a hill by Qinghai Lake, soaking in the most beautiful sky and drifting clouds.
I collected birdsong in an imaginary glass jar—and even swam in Antarctica with the cutest baby penguins. ^^
