About Me

CURRENT MISSION

See the world. Save the world. Have fun while doing so.

ABOUT ME

I am a rising junior at Wesleyan University in Connecticut, where I am a government and environmental studies double major. I hope to get involved in some sort of environmental policy or advocacy work, but would like to be outside of the beltway, per se. Hopefully starting in summer of 2010, I'll branch out a little more in terms of traveling on my own. I'm slowly but surely learning to be a tourist!

Edit: I am now studying in Copenhagen until January 2011!

Edit Edit: I'm now living in New York for summer 2011, going back for senior year at Wesleyan in August.

Edit Edit Edit!: After graduating from university, I'm moving back to Copenhagen to work at the program where I studied, coordinating classes and study tours in their Sustainability and Environment Department.

Edit Edit Edit Edit (I like preserving the profile history :) ): Current master's candidate at Yale University in the US.

I grew up in New York, am a big Yankee fan, and have been a vegetarian since third grade. I also love a good game of foosball/table football.

PHILOSOPHY

Make a difference for the better.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I used the site mostly for surfing when studying abroad, but have also been able to return the favor! In Copenhagen, I'll probably go to the CS events too.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

Met so many interesting people.... Although I'm a vegetarian, I'm pretty open to trying new foods (and drinks) -- you can really see a person's true character when they react to your trying something new. For example, if you're suffering together through the hottest pepper you've ever tasted and when your host asks for water, he tell the waitress to serve you first. Or when you cough after your first shot of gammel dansk.

Interests

Seeing the world, photography, sports (baseball and american football mostly but I'm open to anything!), hugging trees, movies, dark chocolate, exploring new and unknown places, doing things outside my comfort zone.

Recently I've picked up acro yoga (it involves two people - a base and a 'flyer'), which is awesome.

Music, Movies, and Books

Movies: The Last Samurai, V for Vendetta, Star Wars Trilogy, Lord of the Rings Trilogy, The Great Escape, Lost in Translation, The Fall, The Lion King, various documentaries

Music: I mainly listen to rap and rock (all kinds), but am very open to new music. Wesleyan has certainly given me a taste of genres I wouldn't even have heard of had I not attended.

Books: The Stranger, Siddhartha, The Metamorphosis, Blue Clay People, The Myth of Sisyphus, Harry Potter; and can't forget magazines - Time, New York, Time Out New York, Scientific American, National Geographic

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Seeing the rubble of [the real] Yankee Stadium left me in a combination of awe and sadness. For me, it was witnessing the end of an era.

The morning fog over the hillside in Devon (southwest England) and the stillness of the morning, disturbed only by rustling leaves and a birdcall or two.

The mountains and sunset in Granada (thanks to Kate/CouchSurfing!)

Mardi Gras.

Teach, Learn, Share

All I can say from prior experience is to plan ahead, but don't follow a strict schedule! And remember that Eurail passes are not valid in Slovakia. I found that out at 3am. On a train. In Slovakia.

A few things learned from CS so far:
How the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association works
Got to practice Spanish
How to ride a longboard
In the process of learning Danish
How to open a beer with another beer

I'd love to teach someone acro yoga, and if you're interested, can talk for ages about environmental policy/politics/issues.
