PHILOSOPHY
Volumes of Marxist and neo-Marxist analysis call into question the very possibility of “more even” distribution
within a capitalist system for which uneven development is a function of the basic structure
of wealth accumulation.
The standard story is that the baby-boomer hippies either sold out – trading their bongs for Beemers – or were co-opted by the system. In this view, the counterculture’s values didn’t really win out. At least, the victory was only partial and hollow. The elites in control of the system made several tactical concessions, but when it came to the core countercultural values, the system conceded nothing. What it did was take the most dangerous elements of the counterculture, in particular the music, and co-opt them by mass producing ersatz versions, which were then sold back to the masses as the real deal. Thus whatever revolutionary potential emerged from the 60’s was steadily drained of its subversive energy by a system that steadfastly resisted fundamental change.

Though it may be hard to surrender privlege-and the numbers of the fortunate who don't volunatrily do it testify to this fact- it is still easier to give up what one had than actively spurn the privilege one has never had.

“It seems to me the real political task in a society such as ours is to criticize the workings of institutions, that appear to be both neutral and independent; to attack them in such a manner that political violence always exercised itself obscurely through them will be unmasked, so that one can fight against them.
