About Me

I'm a Swiss/American artist and performer who currently lives in Brussels, Belgium.

I'm taking three months away from Europe to visit my roots in the USA, which to be honest feels a little ambitious at the moment.. Everything is so big!

I'm based in Brussels but my art practice takes me to different places around Europe on the reg. I work as an artist, dancer and performer, which means a lot of the work I do falls into the "weird avant guard" category. I also work as a cook, which I enjoy because of the craftsmanship and, well, because I love making good food.

I'm a people-person who enjoys talking and exchanging with folk from all walks of life. I find it extremely enriching to meet people different from myself, who see the world from an other angle or have a fresh point of view. It gives me inspiration for my work and gets me up in the morning!

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

Couchsurfing is tricky depending on where you travel, but the people I've met on here have been the most generous and amazing folk. I'm also more into being a traveler than a tourist, which is something that CS caters to quite well.

Interests

Art, dance, music, cocktails and people. Observing the world around me and figure out how it ticks. Listening to great stories! The different pieces I'm working on now deal with who we talk to when we talk to cameras (a sort of solo dance piece) and another work is a bunch of speculative writing about gender theory and masculinity.

Buut I'm sort of taking a step back from most of my artsy interests at the moment, so I can have a bit of headspace while traveling. If you're curious you can check out my weeeebsiiiiiite: http://andrechapatte.com

Music, Movies, and Books

A like dancing music a lot (rock n roll and UK electronic stuff y'know)
Nausea by JP Sartres, David Fauster Wallace is also good.
I've been watching a lot of Dogme 95 movies recently

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I was flown down to the island of Malta (the European capital of culture for 2018) to do an avant-guard performance piece in an old man's house. Spent two weeks living with this guy and working with the festival organisers to help clear his backyard. One of the most memorable gigs I've ever done!

Teach, Learn, Share

I love to cook, and I've got a few tricks my Italian friends have shown me over the years. Into cooking plant based stuff, but I'm open (sort of a bad vegan). I'm also pretty good at drawing comics?

What I Can Share with Hosts

A positive attitude yo! Contributions around the kitchen, a bombastic meal, you have a shaker? Let's make whisky sours. Having hosted a good amount of people over the years, I've learned what it takes to be a good guest. I also tend learn how to get around by myself pretty quickly, so it's all gooood
