ABOUT ME

I'm currently working as a programmer in Kansas CIty. I absolutely love to travel and think that couch surfing is a great way to discover the world and connect with people. I love to cook and try new foods from all over the world. I'm interested in pretty much everything, and would love the opportunity to meet you : )

PHILOSOPHY

The good side of everything almost ALWAYS out weights the bad.

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I love traveling and meeting folks from all walks of life. I think couchsurfing is one of the best things to come of this era of share economy and internationalism. Everyone should travel, and what better and more accessible way than staying with folks who actually live in the area? I've met some amazing people through the couchsurfing community and hope one day I am in a position to host.

我做过的一件不可思议的事情

My first weekend in France, I was invited along on a trip to spend the night in a cabin in the mountains. It was early January, and freezing. Someone had just dropped out of the trip last minute and my room-mates at my shared apartment invited me along. I was extremely tired from having gotten back from India, spending two weeks back in the US and then turning around to live in France and learn to speak French (which I didn't know a word of upon arriving). BUT, despite that, I agreed to go along, and it's one of the best decisions I've made in my life:

We drive up the snow-covered mountain in a forest of huge pine trees older than my country, and park along the side of this road where it's been cleared out (2-3 ft snow had fallen on this part of the mountain). We then slowly make our way through the thick snow to this cabin in the woods. There's nothing in the way of insulation, it's just a wooden structure with a 2 picnic benches pushed end to end to form a long table on one end of the place, a wood-burning stove near the door, and then 2 long rows of bunk beds at the other end. Some of the group members start a fire in the stove (which is broken, leaking smoke into the cabin, which they then fix). There's a French tradition in this region to make a pot of coffee and put a local liquor into it, and pour that into this contraption called a grole with multiple spouts. Throughout the night, the grole is never to touch the table, it's to be passed from hand to hand and drank from (theoretically each person with their own spout). So we set up a couple long candles, pushed into now-empty wine bottles like in the the most cheesy movies (think Lady and the Tramp), and a couple members get out instruments that they lugged along with them: a saxophone, a guitar, and start to jam with only the candle light and a flash-light someone perched in the rafters, shining down on them through the still smoke-filled air. They jammed, songs I knew, ones I didn't. People sang, and talked, and ate and drank. We then proceed to cook a meal in courses, potatoes for me (they insisted I eat even though, being vegetarian, I'd eaten before hand), then potatoes and thick chunky French bacon) all the while everyone was drinking wine, eating other snacks, and passing the grole around. This was all in celebration of Ukrainian Christmas, which happens 2 weeks after American/French Christmas. When it's getting later in the night, early in the morning, we join hands in a circle, and do a sort of folksy dance while singing Christmas carols. I, not knowing hardly any French, recognized the tune and sang along in English. This seemed to have delighted the group so I got thrown into the middle of the circle and sang the English version of these tunes while everyone danced around me in the dim and cold and merriment. It was the most spectacular night, with the French youth and my new Brazilian and Ukrainian room-mates, speaking English and trying to pick up on French (of which I'd only had a week of classes), and drinking wine and eating amazing rustic food and just being surrounded by some of the coolest folks on this entire planet.
