= 3. THE TRUTH =

Excerpt form the book "Zorba the Greek" by Nikos Kazantzakis.
(Which I strongly recommend, by the way).

My grandfather, from my mother's side, in a village of Crete, used to take the lantern every night and walk around the village to see if any outsider had come; he brought him home, gave him plenty of food and drink, then sat on the sofa, lit the long pipe, turned to his guest (the pay-time had arrived) and told him imperatively:
- Speak!
- What shall I speak of, old Moustoyioryis?
- What you are, who you are, where you come from, what lands and villages your eyes have seen; tell me everything. Go on, speak.
And the guest would start to say facts and lies all together, and my grandfather would smoke his pipe and listen and travel with him, sitting on the sofa. And if he liked the guest, he would say to him:
"You are staying tomorrow too, you are not leaving. You've got more to say."
My grandfather had never left his village; he hadn't been in Megalo Kastro, nor Rethymno.
"What shall I go for? he said; Rethymnians and Kastrians pass by, Rethymno and Kastro come to my house, God bless them. What need do I have to go?"

ΝΚ)
